STOCKTON, C.A. -- The Seton Hall Pirates (3-0) wrapped up their two-game California road trip with a resounding win against the Pacific Tigers (1-3) by a final score of 79-57 on Sunday evening.

The Pirates got off to a hot start, jumping out to a 15-2 lead by the first media timeout. Forward Mariana Valenzuela led the way early with eight points in Seton Hall’s early scoring barrage, including a pair of three-pointers.

Seton Hall’s depth was on display throughout the night, as six different Pirates contributed to the first quarter dominance. Jada Eads and Ja’Kahla Craft were in rhythm early as well, as the duo put up seven and six in the quarter, respectively, helping Seton Hall to a 28-11 advantage.

The Tigers had no answer, as the Pirates’ paint defense kept them away from the basket from the jump. Seton Hall commonly forced Pacific into taking uncomfortable shots, which was key to the early dominance.

Eads capped off a strong first half for the Pirates with a three-pointer at the buzzer. Her fourth field goal on seven shot attempts left her with ten points at the break, and Valenzuela continued to lead Seton Hall in scoring with 14 points.

As they headed to the locker room with a 51-28 lead, five different Pirates had six or more points. One of the only aspects of the first half that Seton Hall would look to clean up was their foul trouble, as three Pirates found themselves with multiple fouls at the half.

On the Pacific side, Tigers leading scorer from their first three games Winner Bartholomew only received four minutes of playing time in the first half, where she was able to post a four point performance. The freshman forward was unable to contribute much the rest of the way as well.

The Pirates slowed down a bit in the third quarter, but maintained a healthy lead. At the 4:36 mark, they led 60-33. Quickly, Shailyn Pinkney found herself with four fouls and would have to sit more than anticipated.

The fourth quarter simply allowed the Pirates to finish taking care of business. Valenzuela boosted her point total to 16 and grabbed eight rebounds, which both led the way for Seton Hall, followed closely by Eads’ 14 points. Along with her point total, the sophomore guard posted three rebounds, five assists, and six steals for her best performance of the young season.

Following closely were Jordana Codio and Savannah Catalon, who had 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Overall, it was a game of complete dominance for the Pirates. Key areas that led to the Tigers’ downfall were the fights for offensive rebounds, second chance points, and turnovers. The Pirates led the battle for second chance points 18-5, as well as the turnover battle 26-12.

Prior to the game, Coach Bozzella highlighted winning the turnover battle by at least ten, and the Pirates were able to do just that.

The Pirates will head home from their California trip with a 3-0 record and prepare to host the Fordham Rams in Historic Walsh Gymnasium on Thursday, November 20 where Jake Marcial and Jacob Glick will have the call.
