SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall Pirates’ (11-17) conference struggles continued as they dropped their second straight game to the Providence Friars (14-11) in a six-inning 11-2 loss. This moves the Pirates to 2-9 in conference play, with both wins coming against the Connecticut Huskies.
Providence got off to a hot start, scoring three runs in the first inning, including one coming off of a solo home run by Brianna De La Fuente. Starting pitcher Rachael Schumann would continue to struggle in the second inning as the Friars tacked on three more runs to lead 6-0 after the inning.
The Pirate offense looked good in the bottom of the second inning as a Loreale Blake walk and a Christina Ginex double gave The Hall runners on second and third with two outs. The Pirates ultimately were unable to plate a run as Angelina Benitez grounded out to end the inning.
Kyra Kreuscher slowed down the Friars’ offense in her two and two thirds innings of work. She exited the game with one earned run and one strikeout. During her innings of work, Seton Hall’s offense cut into the deficit.
Gabby Mercado pinch ran for Erin Howard after her single in the bottom of the fourth. Mercado came around to score on a single from Ginex. That was followed up by a sacrifice fly from Angelina Benitez to give the Pirates their second run of the inning to make the score 7-2.
But the Friars got the bats going again in the sixth inning. A three-run home run for Cameron Dunn and a solo blast for Julia Renny increased the lead to 11-2, becoming the final score.
The positives for Seton Hall are that they tallied seven hits, but they struggled driving in runners. The Pirates next take the field Sunday, March 29 to play the final game of the three-game set with Providence. They hope to limit the strong offense of the Friars and do better with runners in scoring position at the plate to end the series on a high note with a win.
