SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall Pirates (6-8) fell to the Brown Bears (5-7) 9-6 after a late collapse in the ninth inning at Mike Sheppard Sr. Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The game featured two pitchers looking to get on the right foot, as they got the start for their respective team. For Seton Hall, senior Jayden Barroqueiro was on the mound. Entering this game, he was 0-1 on the season, with three appearances featuring one start, allowing five hits, eight runs, and four walks. He had seven strikeouts on the season.

For Brown, freshman Drew Nelson was on the mound. Entering the game, he was 1-1 on the season, with three starts, allowing 20 hits, 15 runs, and nine walks. He had ten strikeouts on the season.

In the first inning, both pitchers and defenses were sharp as each team went three up, three down to start the game.

The second inning changed the game as the Bears were able to get on the board first. A wild pitch from Barroquiero allowed Christian Butera to advance to second, with Logan Meusy scoring. Two more runs followed, and the Bears found themselves up 3-0 in the top of the second.

The Pirates responded with their own three spot as Ty Acker got the Pirates on the board first after he singled to center field. Then, a little later, Tommy Manzo’s single to left field brought in two more runs, tying the game at 3-3.

The third inning was eventful as the Bears came out swinging, with Alex Benevento connecting for a triple to open the inning, and then a single by DJ Dillehay brought in a run to make it 4-3. The Bears were not done as Meusy came around to score again off a Mika Petersen single, pushing the lead to 5-3.

The Pirates got out of the inning and did not stay down for long. They answered with three runs of their own. Two scored on a mistimed throw that brought in Aidan Sengenberger and Jake Lopez. The Pirates led 6-5 heading into the fourth inning.

Over the next four innings, neither team scored, and the game stayed 6-5. A lot of runners were left on the base, especially in scoring position, and neither team was able to take advantage.

In the ninth inning, things took a turn for the worse as Brown rallied to score four runs. Three consecutive doubles and a single sealed the deal, and the Bears went on to win 9-6 in the second game of the series.

The Pirates now turn their attention to the series finale against Brown, looking to win the decisive game with the series tied at 1-1. Tune into 89.5 FM WSOU, where Sean Casey and Darren Worrell will be on the call.
