SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall Pirates (17-6, 9-3) defeated the Xavier Musketeers (1-12, 6-18) 72-47 on Saturday afternoon in a blowout win at Walsh Gymnasium. It was a great bounce-back performance after falling to Creighton on the road this past Wednesday.
Savannah Catalon was outstanding in this one, posting a double-double with 17 points and 11 steals in the game. In her fifth game back, she is averaging double digits in every game that she has played in, since her return against St. Johns. Another player that we saw in this one was Ramani Parker, who made her home debut in Walsh for the Pirates, tallying her first 3-pointer at Seton Hall.
For the most part, it was all Pirates in this one, as once again the trio of Eads, Masonius, and Catalon all put up double figures (13, 16, and 17, respectively).
On the Musketeers side, they had two double-digit scorers, senior forward Loren Christie with 12 and sophomore guard Aizhanique Mayo with 12 as well. The Pirates were able to hold down Xavier’s leading scorer, the Finnish native freshman guard Meri Kanerva, to just seven.
In the first half, the Pirates were trying to play a physical brand of basketball but were called for a plethora of fouls. As the Pirates went into the locker room, the message was clear; play that same aggressive basketball without being as physical, because it was obvious that these refs were not putting away their whistles.
Leading 31-25 heading into the second half, the Pirates needed to find a way to make sure the Musketeers didn’t have a chance to get back into this game. While putting up points themselves was nice, the Hall had to make sure that they were able keep the Musketeers off the board. One way to do that was keeping the ball out of Xavier’s hands.
Catalon did a fantastic job of that with her 11 steals on the day. The Pirates had a dominating 23 steals overall, compared to Xavier with just four.
The Hall would go on to win this game, and now look to continue this domination next week. Their next game will come on Wednesday when they take on the Marquette Golden Eagles from Walsh Gymnasium. Seton Hall last played Marquette on the road at the Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where Jada Eads went off for 20 points in a close one, with the Pirates winning 58-52.
