SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- The Seton Hall Pirates (3-3) finished off the Seton Hall Classic with a sweep in three sets against the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils (0-6) behind the strong play of Tournament MVP Sadie Reich’s 16 kills.
The first set was a series of runs for both teams as neither side was able to gain
a big advantage early on. The highest the lead got was a three point Pirates lead
when they recorded three consecutive points off of a service ace from Hanna Labanowska
and back-to-back kills from Sadie Reich and Daria Safian.
The Blue Devils would storm back, forcing two ties at 5-5 and 10-10 to keep the match
competitive. But after that, the Pirates were dominant, as the errors started to rack
up for CCSU at the service line.
The Pirates were able to score back-to-back points off a kill from Senna Roberts-
Navarro, who finished the match with 9 kills. Additionally, an attack error from Anja
Milosevic sealed the set for Seton Hall, as they went on and won 25-19.
The second set started the same as the first, where another back and forth set contained
a total of nine ties before either team was able to take full advantage. The Pirates
and Blue Devils continued to have an intense back and forth until the Pirates secured
a 16-15 lead.
From there on, the Pirates did not look back, scoring five of the following seven
points to secure the set. Safian was pivotal in this stretch for Seton Hall, providing
a crucial kill at 21-17 to help put the set to rest.
Seton Hall displayed great resilience throughout the match, as CCSU fought back at
multiple points, but the Pirates’ resiliency prevented any lapse in their play.
The Pirates built upon their strong play from the previous two sets, which allowed
them to keep a lead the entire third set. Maddy Loiselle and Alex Rasmussen were critical
down the stretch, finding open spaces on the court and providing excellent defensive
effort to stifle the Blue Devils’ attack.
Two straight kills from Reich set up a 24-19 Pirate lead. Despite the Blue Devils’
attempts of staging a comeback, Asli Subasili sealed the deal with a kill to bring
the Pirates back into the win column to conclude the Seton Hall Classic.
After corrections of key mistakes from their loss to NJIT paired with excellent court
awareness and opportunistic play, the Pirates secured a bounce-back victory.
Looking ahead, the Pirates will commence their road trip as they face the Saint Peters
Peacocks on the road on September 10th at 6:00 P.M.
