COLLEGE PARK, M.D. -- The Seton Hall Pirates (6-5) finished off the Maryland Invitational on a good note after defeating the Coppin State Eagles (6-9) in four sets behind Sadie Reich’s 19-kill performance.
The first set went back and forth as both teams got their fair share of points in
this set. The Pirates found their rhythm early on, creating a 5-3 lead. Reich would
score three of those points in that Pirates run.
After that the Eagles went on a run of their own, recording eight nearly-unanswered
points, the lead was now sitting at 11-6 in favor of Coppin State. The Pirates and
Eagles went point for point as the set continued, and it remained neck and neck up
until the 24-23 mark where the Pirates held set point.
Coppin State suddenly flipped the switch, coming back to score three straight points.
This came from a service error from Hanna Labanowska, followed by back-to-back kills
from Andrea Cintron, sealing the set for the Eagles by a score of 26-24.
The Pirates reentered the court and dominated after the first set. Coppin State had
the early lead, recording back-to-back points, but then the Pirates got right back
in the game with three points of their own.
The Pirates never lost the lead past this point in the set. Eventually, Alexis Opland’s
block would put the Pirates on set point, and then a kill by Asli Subasili would seal
the set at 25-19.
The third set was similar to the previous set in terms of the Pirates' domination.
The Pirates got off to an early lead off of a kill from Loiselle and an attack error
from Takenya Stafford.
Coppin State had moments where they looked strong, but they were playing from behind
as the Pirates never surrendered the lead. Another error from Stafford would put the
Pirates on set point and Subasili would seal the set once again for the Pirates 25-20.
In the fourth and final set, the match remained close until the 12-10 mark where the
Pirates had the lead. Then they took full control from there going on a massive 10-
2 run and the score sat at 21-12. After the service error from Coppin’s Beatriz Cornachini,
the Pirates found themselves on match point. Gwen Adler set up Loiselle for the game
winning kill and the Pirates walked out of the Maryland Invitational with a hard fought
win.
Reich finished with 19 kills, but three other Pirates had double-doubles as well.
Subasilli finished with 10 kills and 10 blocks, Labanowska finished with 11 kills
and 10 digs and Adler finished with a career high 40 assists and 12 digs.
The Pirates will now turn their attention to conference play where they will welcome
the Georgetown Hoyas to the Historic Gymnasium for their Big East opener on September
26. Lauren Reese and Caitlin Barrar will be on the call for that game.
