Pirate Preview: Rodney Brown

At the end of last season, Shaheen Holloway named three-point shooting as his focus for navigating the transfer portal. Coming to South Orange, Rodney Brown, is looking to fill that need. 

 

Seton Hall is the fourth stop in four years for Brown, starting his career at Cal before making stops at Virginia Tech and Loyola Marymount. 

 

The 6’6” senior guard comes to Seton Hall after spending last season in Los Angeles, where he established himself as one of the premier outside shooters in the West Coast Conference, scoring 14 points per game. 

 

The big focus on Brown is his ability to knock down shots from beyond the arc, hitting at a 38.2% clip on over seven attempts per game last season. His 87 made threes led the conference, and his 2.81 threes per game also ranked first in the WCC. 

 

Brown will be a heavy contributor to the Pirates’ ability to stretch the floor and have multiple options on the perimeter. The program badly lacked this last season, shooting just 30.5% from three and ranking sixth-to-last in the entire country in made threes per game. 

 

Brown is used to changes of scenery, starting his career at Cal. He played all 32 games as a true freshman where he shot 39.7% from deep. As a sophomore he made his way to Virginia Tech, shooting 42.4% from three. 

 

His breakout season came last year though, earning All-WCC honorable mention recognition for his performance. He started 30 of 31 games, playing an average of 32.3 minutes.  

 

He reached double figures in 26 of those games, eclipsing 20 points four times. In a contest against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, he erupted for a career-high 28 points while making eight threes. 

 

With an almost entirely new roster, Brown has an opportunity to establish himself as a mainstay in Shaheen Holloway’s rotation. At 6’6”, Brown brings a unique blend of size and scoring that the Pirates largely lacked a year ago. 

 

For a Pirates squad looking to bolster their three-point attack, Brown’s track record and potential gives the Pirates a proven perimeter threat heading into the season, with their first game coming on November 2nd against Saint Peter’s at the Prudential Center.
