On a Seton Hall roster full of new transfers, graduate student Patrick Suemnick will bring the athleticism, veteran leadership, and vibes the Pirates will need to have success this season.
After entering the transfer portal for the third time in four years, Suemnick is looking to make a statement in his final year of collegiate eligibility. The 6 '8 forward from Green Bay, Wisconsin appeared in 34 games for Oklahoma State this past season where he averaged 11.7 minutes primarily off the bench.
However, what stood out about Suemnick’s play last season was his versatility on both sides of the floor, which is something Shaheen Holloway will happily utilize in big moments.
Prior to his time at Oklahoma State, Suemnick spent two years at West Virginia and began his career at Robert Morris. It was at West Virginia where his athleticism and high energy began to put people on notice. In a 2023 game against top-ranked Kansas, Suemnick erupted for a career-high 20 points and a bank shot in the final minute to give the Mountaineers the game-winning lead.
This was not the only time Suemnick has shown he can flourish under the bright lights. Last season he had multiple big-time defensive plays and dunks that propelled the Cowboys to two wins in the NIT before being eliminated by North Texas.
In his time at Oklahoma State he averaged 2.9 points, 1.9 rebounds, and shot 52% from the field with a season-high of 11 points. His ability to get open in the paint for this Pirates team will become invaluable, especially with the additions of Budd Clark and AJ Staton-McCray.
If the Pirates can utilize Suemnick's proven athleticism and run him in a pick-and-pop role during heavy bench minutes or when Godswill Erheriene is not on the floor, that will be an excellent and reliable option to get points on the board in crucial moments.
Moreover, Suemnick looks to improve the depth issues the Pirates faced last season in their frontcourt. He will now help Erheriene, Stephon Payne, and Najai Hines regain dominance in the paint both offensively and defensively. This is an area they will need to excel at and Suemnick’s veteran experience will help players like Erheriene grow, which is exactly what Holloway preaches for his players to do.
Patrick Suemnick will no doubt serve as the burst of energy off the bench for the Pirates. He will come in and make the big momentum shifting plays that will get the Seton Hall faithful on their feet. Suemnick will make his Pirates debut when they take on Saint Peter’s on November 3rd at the Prudential Center.
