The Seton Hall Pirates made a surprising addition early last month, bringing another familiar face back for the upcoming year.

Elijah Fisher will return to South Orange this season after securing a fifth year of eligibility. The 6’6” Canadian guard joins Trey Parker to form an extremely limited returning class.

Fisher started all 33 games in his first year as a Pirate, averaging just north of 20 minutes per game. He was the second lowest-scoring starter among the Pirates last year, averaging 6.6 points per game.

Fisher found his greatest success early-on last season, posting season-long highs against non-conference opponents. He scored 21 points en route to a 68-61 victory over Wagner.

He also found success at the Maui Invitational, contributing 13 points to a win against a ranked N.C. State team. He scored his 1000th career point the next day against USC.

Conference play was somewhat inconsistent for Fisher. The Toronto native reached double digits only five times against BIG EAST opponents, while scoring four or less points in eleven of those games.

Fisher’s sudden return comes in the midst of a legal battle over eligibility. Fisher and over 70 other collegiate basketball players are being represented in the Glancey v. NCAA lawsuit, challenging the NCAA’s implementation of new rules surrounding fifth-year eligibility.

A temporary injunction was granted by California courts to allow Fisher, and others to pursue a fifth year. He was originally denied following last season.

Fisher will look to make a deeper impact offensively this year. He led somewhat downtrodden teams at DePaul and Pacific, remaining a consistent threat from the wing. Despite his modest stature, Fisher’s skill and experience driving in and contesting low helped him better cope with his time at power forward last year.

Additionally, Fisher will no doubt aid Parker in adjusting the new group to Coach Holloway’s program. With so many new pieces and potential unknowns, the Pirates will need all the veteran help they can get to prepare before the season tips off.
