Pirate Preview: Devin Williams

The Seton Hall Pirates entered the offseason with only one returning player, so they needed to essentially revamp the entire squad. After bringing in a few talented guards including Del Jones and Kareem Thomas, Seton Hall’s next need became a center. They got exactly what they were looking for when they added Devin Williams, a 6’10” transfer from Florida Atlantic University.

 

Williams proved to be an exceptional shot blocker last year at FAU, averaging 2.6 blocks per game. He had two separate games where he had seven blocks. His skill set will not only help the team get defensive stops, but it will also provide a significant amount of energy to the atmosphere at The Rock. 

 

Williams’ playstyle is a perfect fit for a Shaheen Holloway led Pirates squad that always places a large emphasis on defense. After losing big men Najai Hines and Stephon Payne to the transfer portal, Williams is expected to be the 1A guy in the front court for the 2026-2027 season. 

 

There is no question Williams’ defensive ability is impressive; however, his offensive ability is arguably just as important to this Pirates team. Last season he averaged 7.5 points per game as well as 5.2 boards, with 2.2 coming on offense. The ability to keep possessions alive will be a huge advantage that Williams can bring to this squad.  

 

Williams will have his work cut out for him in the Big East where he’ll matchup against top big men including Ruben Prey, Luigi Suigo, Oswin Erhunmwunse, and of course Seton Hall transfer Najai Hines.  

 

The Pirates will have a brand new starting five this season. Holloway’s new team might not have experience playing together, but each player’s skill set compliments one another very well. Williams’ paint presence alongside Jones’ ball handling and Thomas’ shooting ability are just part of what makes this team extremely well-rounded. 

 

With a lot of question marks for the Pirates going into the season, Williams’ offensive and defensive talent should provide some consistency to the success of this team.  

 

Seton Hall will start their season when they take on Saint Peter’s on November 2nd at the Prudential Center. Tune in to the action all season long on 89.5 FM WSOU.
