After becoming the starting point guard for the Seton Hall women’s basketball team last season, Amari Wright will be looking to take another big step forward as a fifth-year graduate student as a Pirate. Wright spent her first three seasons with the team on the bench, as star Lauren Park-Lane was the starting point guard. When Park-Lane transferred to Mississippi State after the 2022-23 season, Wright became her successor. She went from averaging 19.9 minutes per game to 30.7 after becoming a starter, appearing in 30 games for Seton Hall last season.

Wright’s defensive part of her game is among the best in the Big East Conference, as she has finished sixth in the conference in steals per game in her past two seasons. Throughout her entire career at Seton Hall, Wright has racked up 154 steals, 121 of those coming in her junior and senior campaigns.  Just like her predecessor Park-Lane, Wright is also an elite passer, as her assists per game mark jumped from 2.4 to 5.3 last season; this was good for 2nd in the conference, only behind UConn’s Nika Muhl. Wright averaged 4.6 points per game last season, with her top game coming against Columbia on the road where she scored 12 points.

Additionally, her season high in assists was also 12, which came against Rutgers at home. Wright’s scoring success last season comes from the interior, as she shot 41 for 91 (.451) on two-point field goals, while from behind the arch, she was 6 for 31 (.194). She has been solid from the free throw line over her Pirates career as well, going 107 for 144 (.743) in her four undergraduate years. Her distribution will be poised to shine once again this upcoming season, as well as being an all-around-the-court asset for head coach Tony Bozzella.

As a team captain, Amari Wright will not only be a huge part of the team on the court, but she will be a leader off the court. She is one of the most experienced players on a relatively young and new-looking Seton Hall women’s basketball team that is ready to shine this year.
