One Giant Question: When’s the 2025 Draft again?

Two years ago, I recapped game-by-game the Giants miraculously making the playoffs. I did not know it at the time, but that season kneecapped the Giants franchise and set them back an indeterminate number of years. But it was fun while it lasted.

The Giants got steamrolled 28-6 at home to open the 2024-25 season yesterday against the Minnesota Vikings. On the bright side, they didn’t lose 40-0 again!

Wearing their 1925 throwback jerseys, the Giants were masterful, and perfectly replicated what a 1920s football team would look like today. The offense was putrid, the playcalling was boring and uninspired, and the defense got carved up by a backup quarterback.

To the dismay of many Giants fans, Daniel Jones was rolled out as the starting quarterback once again. It truly was a predictable performance: 22-of-42 passing for 186 yards, two interceptions, one of which was returned for a Vikings touchdown, and took some of the most mind-numbing sacks you’ve ever seen.

This is going to be another lost season for the Giants. I think it is important to recognize that now and plan accordingly. This is not a good team, the coaches do not appear to be coaching well, and the general manager has not done a good job assembling this team.

If this continues, which it almost certainly will, the Giants might have to clean house after the season ends. I do not care that Daboll won an award two years ago. Joe Judge had us fooled at first, too. Joe Schoen made some fun picks over the years, but plenty of those have not panned out.

Here is my opinion – I want the Giants to lose. I need the Giants to lose. I need them to be horrible and get a top-three pick in the draft. I need it to be awful to watch, because that is how you rebuild.

Whenever this idea gets brought up, you get cries from the “true fans”. “How dare you want the Giants to lose games?” “If you want them to lose, you aren’t a real fan,” etc., etc.

Do you know why the Giants tried to move up to draft Drake Maye? Because having a top-three pick and the chance to draft a franchise QB is insanely valuable. The Giants wouldn’t have had to try to move up if they didn’t win a few too many meaningless games in a meaningless season where they were never, ever going to make the playoffs. They have played themselves out of a top draft pick so many times, and they continue to suffer the consequences.

The Giants are the Atlanta Hawks of the NFL. Sure, they’ve got one or two fun players, and do you remember that awesome run they went on a few years ago? Wasn’t that fun? They are stuck in purgatory. Too bad to be good, and just barely too good to reap the rewards of being bad.

New York goes on the road to Washington DC next week, with a matchup against a Commanders team who were able to lose enough games, in an attempt to draft who they hope will be a franchise quarterback in Jayden Daniels. Should be fun.
