NFL Predictions and Opinions: NFC North Edition
Published: Thursday, August 22, 2024
by Ryan Nelke and Chris Heite
Heading into 2024, the NFC North has a fresh look. For the first time in 30 years, the Detroit Lions have topped the division, signaling a shift in power. In Green Bay, fans witnessed the rise of Jordan Love, who led the Packers from a 3-6 start to the final playoff spot, nearly defeating the top-seeded 49ers in the Divisional Round. Meanwhile, the Chicago Bears are hopeful that quarterback Caleb Williams, the top pick in the 2024 draft, will revive the franchise. However, in Minnesota, rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy suffered a torn meniscus during the preseason. This means that Skol Nation’s hopes for this season now rest on Sam Darnold. Let’s dive into our predictions for the NFC North this year.
Detroit Lions
After years of struggle, the Lions are finally a powerhouse in the league with genuine Super Bowl aspirations. Jared Goff has experienced a career resurgence since leaving the Rams, and the team has built around him with stars like Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Sam LaPorta. With Ben Johnson continuing as offensive coordinator, the Lions’ offense is primed for another strong year. On defense, Aidan Hutchinson leads as he enters his third season, bolstered by offseason additions in the secondary. The Lions used high draft picks to bring in defensive backs Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr., and signed veterans Carlton Davis III and Amik Robertson. I expect the Lions to finish 12-5 and secure a Wild Card spot, losing the division tiebreaker.

The Lions' recent performance has finally sparked optimism within the fanbase. Jared
Goff has proven the doubters wrong and showcased himself as a solid quarterback. With
offensive stars like Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jahmyr Gibbs, Detroit is becoming a serious
contender. The defense, led by Aidan Hutchinson, is also formidable. Although last
season didn’t fully live up to expectations, the Lions’ potential remains high. I
predict a standout year for Detroit, with a record of 15-2, making them the top team
in the NFC.

Green Bay Packers
Green Bay seems to have found yet another franchise quarterback in Jordan Love. The front office has shown confidence in the signal-caller, signing him to a four-year, $220 million contract. During the offseason, the Packers improved their backfield by replacing the aging Aaron Jones with former Raiders star Josh Jacobs. Although they’ve lacked a top receiver since Davante Adams' departure, the Packers have a solid receiving corps. Going into 2024, their group includes Jayden Reed, Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, and Dontayvion Wicks. Defensively, they signed free safety Xavier McKinney from the Giants, complementing an already strong secondary led by cornerback Jaire Alexander. After a promising season last year, the Packers are positioned to be a contender, with Love's development being key. The sky is the limit with this squad, and I have the Packers winning the division with a 12-5 record.

Green Bay made headlines for their unusually high spending this offseason. The spending
spree is a clear signal of their confidence in quarterback Jordan Love, who received
a substantial contract extension. Love showed promise during his first season as a
starter and is expected to be a standout player this year. Additionally, the signing
of running back Josh Jacobs should significantly elevate the Packers' ground game.
With an upgraded offense and a solid defense already in place, Green Bay is poised
to be a formidable contender in the NFC. The NFC North, one of the league's most competitive
divisions, will present challenges from improved teams like the Lions and Bears. The
key to the Packers' success hinges on Love living up to his elite status and justifying
his contract. I anticipate a strong season for Love and the team, projecting the Packers
to finish with a 13-4 record and secure the fifth seed in the NFC.

Chicago Bears
Caleb Williams, the first overall pick, has the potential to become a major star for the Bears. After a stellar collegiate career, the former Heisman winner joins a team that has built around him with key acquisitions such as running back D’Andre Swift, wide receiver Keenan Allen, and rookie receiver Rome Odunze. Star wideout DJ Moore had a career year in 2023 and looks to put up similar numbers this season. The Bears’ defense also features top talent, including All-Pro cornerback Jaylon Johnson and Pro Bowl defensive end Montez Sweat. With these additions, I expect the Bears to achieve immediate success, finishing 9-8 and securing the final Wild Card spot.
— Ryan Nelke
The Chicago Bears enter 2024 as a team full of questions and high expectations from
their fans. With the excitement surrounding first overall pick Caleb Williams, there's
hope that the team's struggles and playoff droughts are finally coming to an end.
However, Williams isn't the only significant addition to the offense. The acquisition
of wide receiver Keenan Allen and running back D’Andre Swift has transformed the Bears'
offense from one of the weakest into a formidable unit. Swift’s strength on the ground
combined with Williams' dual-threat capabilities promises to enhance the running game
significantly. Additionally, the Bears boast a solid defense, which will be crucial
for overcoming tougher opponents later in the season. I foresee a strong year for
the Bears, projecting them to finish 9-8 and steal a playoff spot as the seventh seed.

Minnesota Vikings
Minnesota’s season took a hit with the news that rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy will miss the entire year due to a meniscus injury. The Vikings will now have to rely on Sam Darnold, who struggled with the Jets and Panthers. Despite this setback, the Vikings have offensive weapons, including wide receiver Justin Jefferson, two-time Pro Bowler T.J. Hockenson, and rookie Jordan Addison. They also signed running back Aaron Jones after his release from Green Bay. However, the defense has some concerns. After the departure of Danielle Hunter, Minnesota will look to rookie edge rusher Dallas Turner to revive the pass rush. In the secondary, the Vikings are led by aging stars Stephon Gilmore and Harrison Smith. It remains to be seen if these veterans can still lock down receivers or if they are too past their prime. I predict the Vikings will finish last in the division with a 4-13 record.
— Ryan Nelke
Before the preseason, the addition of rookie J.J. McCarthy offered hope for the Vikings
fanbase. However, his season-ending injury has left Sam Darnold as the starter, which
may hinder the team’s offensive potential. Darnold’s struggles as a starter in the
past have been well-documented, so the passing game will probably be lackluster at
best. Despite having talented receivers and a decent defense, the Vikings’ passing
game won’t reach its highest potential due to Darnold’s lack of arm talent. This will
be a season full of disappointment for Vikings fans. I expect a disappointing season,
with the Vikings finishing 6-11, last in the division.
