Silly season signings, surprise winners, and head-to-head heat made July a dramatic month in the world of racing. Here are the top stories in motorsports from the summer stretch.

Will Arrow McLaren’s Controversial Changes Work?

One of the most volatile driver lineups in IndyCar’s recent history is preparing for yet another sudden change. 

Arrow McLaren announced their 2027 lineup earlier this month, with six-time champion Scott Dixon and reigning Indy 500 winner Felix Rosenqvist slated to join the team. The pair will replace departing drivers Nolan Siegal and Christian Lundgaard, while Pato O’Ward remains in the No. 5 seat. 

The move seems to be an attempt at creating a more cohesive, stable system at McLaren. Dixon’s veteran experience and Rosenqvist’s consistency indicate a break from the team’s reliance on younger talent in recent years. Their input could help close gaps in technical development towards other teams where O’Ward has struggled to make an impact. 

But the powerhouse lineup is not without its flaws. The decision to sack Lundgaard is a dubious one, given his success so far this year. Two wins, five podiums, and a fourth-place position in the standings put the Danish driver ahead of O’Ward as McLaren’s top performer. 

Lundgaard’s struggle for pace on ovals could be a key factor in his departure. O’Ward has already outperformed him in three of the four oval races so far this year. Factor in the signing of two former Indy 500 winners, one of which has over 20 career victories on oval tracks, and it looks like the team is laser-focused on chasing the Borg-Warner Trophy next May, at Lundgaard’s expense.

McLaren’s IndyCar project is no stranger to roster difficulties. The No. 6 entry went through three drivers during the 2024 season following an untimely injury from the newly signed David Malukas. In February the team settled a breach of contract lawsuit with Alex Palou stemming from his sudden 2022 signing with Chip Ganassi Racing.

Three Races, Three Winners as Formula 1 Enters Summer Break

Two new winners and an ever-dominant Kimi Antonelli took the top step in July.

Charles Leclerc opened the month with his first win of the season at the British Grand Prix. Antonelli took home the gold in Saturday’s sprint race, only to suffer damage late on Sunday and forfeit his spot on the podium. Lewis Hamilton came home third to give Ferrari their first double podium of the season.

Antonelli struck back in Belgium after overcoming a strategic deficit to the Ferraris to take the win. The sophomore Mercedes driver made a statement in Spa, running a near-flawless race and securing his sixth win of the campaign. Leclerc followed him home in second while Max Verstappen took the third spot for RedBull.

An unexpected result in Budapest shocked the paddock heading into the summer break. What looked like Ferrari’s race to lose through Friday practice ended with Lando Norris on the top step by Sunday afternoon. The reigning world champion took home the win following a race-long battle with teammate Oscar Piastri.

July was disastrous for Mercedes’ George Russell. Despite splitting the Ferrari’s on the podium in Silverstone, a crash in Belgium and a poor race start in Hungary stifled the Brit’s effort to make gains on Antonelli. Russell now sits third in the standings with 160 points, 59 points behind his championship-leading teammate. 

Heim-Hocevar Rivalry Boiling Over as NASCAR’s Future Stars Take Center Stage

Two of NASCAR’s rising stars are developing one of the most bitter rivalries in recent memory.

Corey Heim and Carson Hocevar have both come into their own over the past two seasons. Heim dominated the Craftsman Truck Series last year, winning 12 races and the championship. On the other hand, Hocevar finds himself leading Spire Motorsports’ push to become a weekly threat in the Cup Series. 

The latest saga began earlier this year in San Diego. The 23XI Racing driver punted Hocevar out of the way en route to his first career Cup Series victory at the end of June. The two most recently butted heads at the Brickyard 400, where Heim held up Hocevar following a pit cycle, prompting the No. 77 driver to show Heim the middle-finger out of the driver's side window. 

Heim won the battle, taking home a dominant victory at Indianapolis. Despite his part-time status, the Georgia-native is already making a huge impact on the sport, already nabbing two wins in just 15 starts. 

Meanwhile, Hocevar is quickly becoming a standout driver of his own. The Spire talent earned Rookie of the Year honors last season and nabbed his first Cup win earlier this year at Talladega. Off the track, Hocevar’s Twitch streams and otherwise eccentric personality have gained him a fan-favorite status. 

The two are no strangers to one another. In 2023, Hocevar cost Heim the Truck Series title after inexplicably wrecking him from the race lead in the season finale.
