SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. — The Seton Hall Pirates (1-1) suffered a crushing 57-56 defeat against the Fordham Rams (1-1) at home in Walsh Gymnasium on Saturday. This loss marks the first time since 1989 that Seton Hall has lost a nonconference game in Walsh Gymnasium — and coincidentally, it was also to Fordham.
Jackie Johnson III was a standout for Fordham, delivering in clutch moments throughout the game. He hit two quick 3-pointers to cut a six-point deficit early in the second half and tied the game at 38, playing a pivotal role in keeping the Rams within reach.
The Pirates struggled at the free-throw line, converting just eight of their 16 chances. Prince Aligbe acknowledged the need for improvement, stating postgame that the team must “shoot it with intent,” emphasizing a need for focus on free-throw shooting in practice.
Seton Hall did have some bright spots offensively. Aligbe scored 10 points, including his first 3-pointer of the season in the first half. Dylan Addae-Wusu contributed eight points, which included a 3-pointer, while Yacine Toumi added 12 points before fouling out. Toumi went 5-for-5 from the field and 1-for-1 from beyond the arc, remaining a reliable scorer until his exit. Isaiah Coleman made his season debut after missing the opener against Saint Peter’s, scoring seven points, with five coming in the second half. Coleman’s performance showed some signs of rust but also promise.
For Fordham, while Johnson ultimately stole the show, Will Richardson also had a strong outing with 11 points, four assists, and a perfect 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. Fordham managed a better free-throw percentage than Seton Hall, shooting 66.7% on 12 of 18.
In the game’s final moments, Johnson clinched the win for Fordham. As the clock ticked down, he released a floater just as the buzzer sounded, hitting the nylon and stunning Walsh Gymnasium. After review, it was confirmed to be a good basket, sealing Fordham’s 57-56 victory.
Seton Hall coach Shaheen Holloway addressed the loss, noting that the team needs to learn from it and move forward. “We've got to learn from it. We've got to watch film. Sometimes when you watch yourself, you kind of learn a lot,” he said. Despite the setback, Holloway expressed optimism that the team will improve.
The Pirates will have a chance to regroup before their first road game of the season against the Hofstra Pride on Wednesday in Uniondale, N.Y. Live coverage begins on WSOU at 7:45 p.m. Spencer Gonzales and Bobby Steiner will have the call.
