Pirates Look to Get Back on Track vs NJIT

After a historic loss to Monmouth on Saturday, the Seton Hall Pirates (4-4) look to reset on Wednesday night against the NJIT Highlanders (1-8).

The Pirates’ return to The Rock was marked by the absence of team leader Dylan Addae-Wusu. Monmouth guard Abdi Bashir took advantage, delivering another standout performance against a local foe with 28 points and impressive perimeter shooting. Seton Hall head coach Shaheen Holloway's postgame press conference left a bitter taste but carried a clear message.

“I want to get more out of everybody... the whole team.”

While much of the coverage from Saturday’s game has been negative, there were highlights that could benefit the Pirates on Wednesday night. Isaiah Coleman was efficient offensively, tying his career high with 20 points and shooting 61.5% from the field. Garwey Dual, though not a standout offensively, recorded a career-high five steals, showcasing his defensive potential.

Defensively, the Pirates cannot afford a repeat of Saturday’s performance when they face NJIT on Wednesday night. Holloway’s teams are known for toughness and grit, and the potential return of defensive leader Addae-Wusu could help. But what about the rest of the squad?

Offensively, playing with one of the slowest tempos in the nation has its advantages, but the Pirates must start capitalizing on their opportunities—particularly at the free-throw line, where their 59.2% ranks near the bottom of Division I. However, a strong performance against the Highlanders could quiet the negative publicity surrounding the team.

NJIT has struggled to start its season, with a non-conference schedule dominated by road games. Sunday's matchup at UMass didn’t favor head coach Grant Billmeier and his team, as they fell to the Minutemen.

While the record doesn't tell the full story, former Pirate player and associate head coach Grant Billmeier has a talented roster. Sophomore guard Tariq Francis, the former America East Rookie of the Year, has been a standout for the Highlanders, ranking among the nation's top 50 scorers with 19.7 points per game.

The Pirates must limit Francis' scoring, disrupt his playmaking, and control the boards. Wednesday’s game is crucial to maximize opportunities before facing Oklahoma State, Rutgers, and the start of BIG EAST play against Villanova on Dec. 17.

Tip-off from the Prudential Center is set for 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Tune in live with pregame coverage starting at 8:15 p.m. on 89.5 FM WSOU. Victor Gonzalez and Jack Pine will have the call.
