PALM DESERT, CALIF. - In a showcase of skill and tenacity, USC’s star sophomore point guard JuJu Watkins led the charge, as the Trojans defeated Seton Hall 84-51 in Palm Desert, California.

Watkins, the focal point of USC’s offense, displayed why she is one of the nation’s premier players. She scored 20 points, shooting an efficient 50% from beyond the arc, and fueled USC’s dominance on both ends of the court.

USC set the tone early, using a relentless full-court trap that disrupted Seton Hall’s rhythm from the opening tip. The Pirates struggled to navigate the press, committing numerous turnovers that led to easy scoring opportunities for the Trojans. The defensive pressure not only stymied Seton Hall’s offense, but also drained their energy and ability to claw back into the game.

While Watkins was the spark, the Trojans’ ability to close out quarters proved to be the difference-maker. USC ended the first half on a 12-2 run, turning what had been a tight game into a manageable 37-28 lead at the break. Seton Hall repeatedly found themselves outmatched in key moments, as USC tightened their defense and executed with precision in the waning seconds of each quarter.

Offensive rebounding also played a pivotal role in USC’s victory. The Trojans dominated the boards, securing 15 offensive rebounds that led to 14 second-chance points. Seton Hall’s inability to control the glass proved costly, as USC capitalized on their extra opportunities to keep the Pirates at bay.

For Seton Hall, there was still a bright spot in Faith Masonius. The graduate transfer delivered a career-high 25 points, showcasing her ability to score in a variety of ways. Masonius was the Pirates’ most reliable offensive weapon, hitting from mid-range and attacking the basket with purpose.

Her performance was a testament to her consistency this season, as she continues to be a leader for Seton Hall. Despite Masonius’s heroics, Seton Hall struggled to find additional scoring options. The Trojans’ defense made it difficult for the Pirates to establish any flow, and turnovers stemming from the full-court trap compounded their issues.

Looking ahead, the road doesn’t get easier for either team. Seton Hall returns home eager to regroup and snap their two-game losing streak, gearing up to face the University of San Francisco on Monday. For USC, the victory sets the stage for a Friday matchup against Saint Louis, where they will look to extend their strong start to the season.

Seton Hall will look to build on Masonius’s standout performances as they search for consistency and answers in upcoming tough competitions.
