The Seton Hall Pirates (1-0) handled business in their 2024-25 season opener against the Wagner Seahawks (1-1). With head coach Tony Bozzella out for this game due to health concerns, assistant coach Jose Rebimbas took the helm and helped the Pirates to their first win of the season, 84-40.
Maryland transfer Faith Masonius was nothing short of spectacular in her first regular season game at Walsh. The grad student completely took over, scoring 23 points on 11-of-17 shooting. As if her scoring wasn’t enough, she added six rebounds, four assists, and three assists to her incredible night.
The Seahawks managed to hang around with the Hall for the first quarter, largely because of their excellence behind the arc. Wagner went 4-of-8 from three, which was needed in order to keep up with Masonius. She was a flamethrower, scoring 11 of Seton Hall’s 22 points in the quarter.
The second quarter is where Seton Hall ran Wagner right out of Walsh Gymnasium. It was a masterful combination of lockdown defense and free-flowing offense. Seven different Pirates scored in the second and the team combined for a staggering 13-of-20 from the field. On the other side of the ball, Seton Hall allowed just six points and forced nine turnovers, showing the defensive prowess we’ve come to expect from them.
The defense picked up right where it left off in the third quarter, holding Wagner to less than ten points again. It was business as usual for the Hall, scoring 21 points, including an end-of-quarter buzzer-beater three from Sydney Eggleton for her first collegiate points.
Seton Hall took their foot off the gas in the fourth quarter, putting up 13 points on 40% shooting. The Pirates once again dominated their first game of the season, but it wasn’t just because of Masonius.
Amari Wright almost had a double-double, scoring nine points and dropping dimes left and right; she ended her night with ten assists. Yaya Lops also dominated in the paint, putting up 15 points and six rebounds in just 26 minutes.
The Pirates look to keep the momentum going when they come back to Walsh on Nov. 12 with a matchup against Fordham.
