Knocked Loose North America Tour: A Cross-Genre Spectacle

At the time of writing this, Knocked Loose have just announced their first North American headliner in 2 years with the “Hive Mind” tour. This is a highly anticipated tour with Knocked Loose, who are truly pushing the limits of how far a band is as heavy as them can go.
One of the things that caught my eye immediately when I saw this tour was announced was who they decided to bring along as support. They’re bringing along Connecticut metalcore band Boundaries, Pennsylvania alt rock act Superheaven, and finally, maybe the biggest and most exciting left turn on this bill, Florida hip-hop artist Denzel Curry. This entire lineup is super cool and super diverse with a bunch of different sounds and feelings being expressed by all these amazing artists. Knocked Loose has always brought on amazing openers and always tries to make their shows diverse and get this different vibe with each band, and I think especially it’s really cool to have someone like Curry, who has metal influence in his music, but is primarily a rapper. Overall, I hope this tour starts a trend of having more metal bands have these “cross genre” tours.
Now with all of that being said, I believe this same journey can be accomplished if these cross-genre tours become more common. Having even just one band or artist on a lineup that is a completely different genre from the rest can lead to some really fun diversity during the show. This could also lead people to not only discover a different band they like, but a whole new genre they might not have checked out if they didn’t come to this show.
This Knocked Loose tour is going to reel in a lot of fans from not only Knocked Loose but also a lot of Denzel Curry fans who have never been to a metal or even a rock show before. There are going to be not only a lot of rap fans discovering metal, but also a lot of metal fans will get to experience hip hop and rap in a way they maybe would’ve never experienced. On that same side, with Superheaven in the lineup a lot of people will be experiencing alt rock and shoegaze in an intimate way as well. And best of all, these people who are experiencing metal for the first time are not only going to see one of the biggest current names in the genre but also see one of the best up and coming bands with Boundaries. All in all, it’s a really cool experience for people to discover something they maybe wouldn’t have discovered before.
I recently had this experience last October when I went to go see Sunami and Scowl in Denver. After the first two bands played, both hardcore bands, this band Nuevo Testamento came on and, to my surprise, started playing new wave music. And they were incredible, they were a great breather for the night from all the heavy music, and it was a wonderful, mellow time. But that show was also how I found out I really enjoyed new wave music and connected with the atmosphere a lot. I probably wouldn’t have gotten into the genre if it wasn’t for this show and for experiencing it in a live setting.
Another cool example of this is Grey Day, a yearly tour hosted by hip hop duo $uicideboy$, who have occasionally incorporated some hardcore bands into their primarily hip-hop lineup. These bands include Drain, Code Orange, Turnstile, and even Knocked Loose themselves. It allows not only for that journey mentioned before, but also it allows a lot of different people to discover music they maybe never would’ve discovered in this intimate setting if they hadn’t come. Overall, I think it’d be a nice experience for metal shows to welcome in maybe a band from a complete genre as it would add a cherry on top to an already perfect sundae.
I have no doubt in mind that this Knocked Loose tour is going to be a lot of people’s favorite tour of the year. With Knocked Loose being one of the biggest bands in the scene right now, I would love to see this kickstart a trend within the metal world of incorporating more not metal bands/artists in lineups. Maybe not every metalhead will be receptive to this idea, but I think the fans that can be gained through this are totally worth it.
With the Hivemind Tour, I know that the journey the crowd will go on and the new genres of music people will be exposed to are absolutely going to be the main focal point. This tour will see a growth of people that are now into metal music, but also hip hop and alt rock, who maybe would’ve never discovered the genre like this otherwise. The Hivemind Tour with Knocked Loose, Denzel Curry, Superheaven and Boundaries will not only be one of the coolest tours this year, but I also hope it’ll be one of the most influential tours we’ve had in a while, and start the trend of more “cross genre” tours.
