Man Killed in ICE Vehicle Stop

BIDDEFORD, MAINE—An ICE agent fatally shot a motorist on Monday. This is the second time in a week that an ICE agent has used deadly force, according to AP News. On July 7th, an agent shot a Mexican native in Houston.

The man who was shot has been identified as Joan Sebastian Guerrero, a 26-year-old man, a native of Colombia. Guerrero was fatally shot after federal agents tried to stop the vehicle while he was driving. A spokesperson for Sen. Angus King (I-Maine) said that no body cameras were on the agents during the incident.

Two Maine immigration advocacy groups: Maine Immigrants' Rights Coalition (MIRC) and Presente! issued a joint statement Monday, saying the individual who was killed was a Colombian man who they claimed was authorized to work in the United States and had a Social Security number, according to ABC News

The groups called for a "prompt, independent, and transparent investigation." They also called for a full accounting of every agency and officer involved, as well as the preservation of all body-camera footage, surveillance footage, and communications between the federal officials involved.

Since the shooting ICE agents have been ordered to pause most vehicle stops nationwide. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin ordered this suspension in order to facilitate additional officer training.
