Iberian Clash in the Round of 16

The round of 16 matchup between Spain and Portugal was a game of the old mettle of
Portugal against the new energy of Spain. It saw one of the greatest players of all time making
his final stand in the World Cup and one of the most promising young players showing off his
talents. A game that ended up being Cristiano Ronaldo’s final World Cup match was certainly a
nailbiter, no matter who you were rooting for. The Spanish victory 1-0 was earned in stoppage
time after a well played game on both sides.

Spain opened up strong as a heavy force on offense, even coming close to scoring only 3
minutes into the game, but a shot by Mikel Oyarzabal went wide. Spain didn’t let up though,
forcing Portugal’s goalie Diogo Costa to make back-to-back saves after both young star Lamine
Yamal and left winger Alex Baena tried to earn a goal for Spain. The rest of the first half was
composed of Portugal’s rock solid duo Rúben Dias and Renato Veiga on defense putting a stop to
Spain’s possession. There was not much offensive action from Portugal, most of their efforts
were focused on preventing Spain’s fiery offense from breaking the line.

The second half was incredibly tactical from both teams. Portugal was able to gain
ground at the beginning of the half, but they were unable to find Cristiano Ronaldo and give him
the chance to score, as Spain was very careful to heavily mark him. Bruno Fernandes got a shot
off in the 76th minute, but hit the side of the goal. Dani Olmo also made an attempt on goal, but
his shot was stopped by Spanish goalie Ruben Dias. Beyond the initial Portuguese attack, neither
team was particularly successful at gaining ground. The ball spent a lot of the second half
hanging out at midfield.

The game seemed quite locked in a stalemate until the 91st minute. Spain took a free
kick, but moved quicker than the Portuguese defense expected. Fabián Ruiz passed through the
defense to Ferran Torres, who passed the ball to Mikel Merino in the box where he sent the ball
to the bottom corner to collect the win for Spain 1-0. The end of this game spelled heartbreak for
Portugal, specifically Cristiano Ronaldo, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest soccer
players of all time. Many speculated before this World Cup run, that this would be his last time
in the tournament, his last chance to win a World Cup for Portugal. Ronaldo announced his
retirement from the sport in the pre-match press conference before the game against Spain. Spain
is now due to play France on Tuesday the 14th
