SCOTCH PLAINS, N.J. - More than 100 community members gathered at the Shackamaxon Country Club on Monday, June 15, to honor loved ones lost and support student scholarships during the Aspiring Kindness Foundation’s 13th annual golf outing.

This year’s event paid tribute to Fire Chief Jeff Markey, a founding member of the foundation who passed away in December of 2025. Chief Markey served as the fire chief during the tragic Boland Hall fire at Seton Hall University, which killed 3 students. Chief Markey’s wife and family attended the outing to help celebrate his legacy.

This year's event featured the traditional game of golf, a silent auction, awards, and a lunch. Glen Schuck of 1010 WINS served as MC, announcing that the foundation will award $25,000 in scholarships to Seton Hall University. He also announced that the silent auction raised $7,600. Schuck also announced that the foundation has now raised over $400,000 in donations.

One of the volunteers of the event, Tara Hart, reflected on the event, saying, “This is a very special event, and it's a great way to raise awareness, while also remembering the horrific day.”

The Aspiring Kindness Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation that was founded on the 10th anniversary of the Boland Hall fire. The corporation provides financial assistance to support emergency first responders, providers, and Seton Hall students. The organization is named after and is in honor of Aaron Karol, one of the three Seton Hall students who died in the fatal dormitory fire at Boland Hall in January of 2000. Organizers emphasized that the event serves not only as a fundraiser but also as a reminder of the importance of fire safety, community compassion, and the message of kindness towards others.
