NEWARK, N.J. - The New Jersey Devils (14-7-1) held off a late game surge from the Detroit Red Wings (13-9-1) on Monday night, securing a 4-3 win.
Shots on goal were far and few early on, as both offenses struggled to get solid scoring chances. However, physicality was certainly on display and that was showcased when New Jersey’s Stefan Noesen and Detroit’s J.T. Compher dropped the mitts and dueled in front of the Devils bench.
Timo Meier would break the ice in the second half of the first period, as he deflected Noesen’s shot from the point and got it behind Detroit netminder Cam Talbot. Nico Hischier would be credited with the secondary assist.
Less than four minutes later, the Red Wings responded as while Jacob Markstrom was able to stop Patrick Kane’s initial shot on goal, Alex DeBrincat was there to clean up in front of the net, tying up the game at one. Kane and Moritz Seider would be tagged with the assists.
New Jersey answered right away, and in emphatic fashion, as they scored not one, but two goals in the final two minutes and four seconds of the period. First, it was Hischier who scored on a wrist shot out in front of Talbot, with Meier and Jesper Bratt picking up the helpers. Then, 66 seconds later, Cody Glass copied Meier by scoring on a deflection of his own, with Luke Hughes and Connor Brown adding the assists.
When the final seconds trickled off at the end of the period, New Jersey took a 3-1 lead into the locker room.
The Red Wings went to the powerplay almost instantaneously to begin the second, as Dougie Hamilton took a minor penalty, and Detroit capitalized, with James van Riemsdyk beating Markstrom on the backhand to cut the deficit to one. Andrew Copp and Emmitt Finnie tallied the assists.
New Jersey once again had a response, as midway through the second, the puck trickled out in front of the Detroit net, and Brown caught Talbot by surprise, tapping it home before Talbot could position himself. Dawson Mercer would tally the lone assist on the goal.
The Devils would go into the second intermission leading 4-2.
While it took just over half the period, Detroit once again would not let the game get away from them, as Dylan Larkin was able to do the dirty work in front of the net and beat Markstrom with a tap in, bringing the game back to a one-goal contest. Assists would go to Seider and Lucas Raymond.
The momentum stayed with the Red Wings for the remainder of the final period as they continued to try to find the equalizer, but the Devils embraced a “bend but don’t break” mentality.
Markstrom made several key saves down the stretch, especially in the final ten seconds which saw Detroit get two grade-A scoring chances, but the Devils netminder shut everything down, with the horn ending the late-game push.
With the win, the Devils will look to start a winning streak when they take on the St. Louis Blues Wednesday night at the Prudential Center. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
