NEWARK, N.J. – The New Jersey Devils entered Monday night at 2-2-0 on the season, coming off a 4-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks at the Prudential Center.

Monday’s starting lineup had the forward group as Nico Hischier, Luke Evangelista, and Timo Meier and the defensive group as Luke Hughes and Brett Pesche with Nico Daws in net.

The first period for the Devils started out hot. They kept controlling the puck in the offensive zone and had some good shots even though a good amount was not registered on net, but New Jersey took the first penalty in the game midway through the first from Brenden Dillon for interference.

Ottawa generated a respectable number of chances but could not score on the power play. Not too shortly after the Senators went on the power play again from a major penalty from Anthony Mantha for boarding. New Jersey did kill the major penalty.

Ottawa netminder Linus Ullmark had the biggest save of the first period on a 2-on-1 wrist shot from Amadeus Lombardi. Tyler Kleven had a cross checking against Lombardi 16:58 into the first that the Senators would end up killing because of a Luke Hughes interference penalty against Shane Pinto that made it 4-on-4.

Even with both sides getting physical and taking penalties, Ottawa finished the first outshooting the Devils 7-4. The second period started off right away with a Senators goal scored by Pinto, which was his first goal of the season in which he had 23 goals last season. His goal was assisted both by Michael Amadio and Claude Giroux.

Ottawa kept the pressure on Daws from the first penalty of the second from Lombardi slashing penalty against Stephen Halliday, but the Devils were able to kill the penalty. Devils forward Evangelista had a hooking penalty against Ridly Greig which resulted in a power play goal by Stephen Halliday, assisted by Tim Stutzle and Dylan Cozens making it 2-0 Senators.

The second period for the Devils did not look great, especially conceding the first two goals in the second period. The first goal was a Senators goal scored by Pinto, assisted both by Amadio and Giroux. Halliday power play goal assisted by Stutzle and Cozens made it 2-0 for the Senators.

The Devils turned the puck over a lot gave Ottawa a few grade A scoring chances off odd man rushes which sucked the life out of the New Jersey bench and crowd. Daws is a big reason New Jersey still had some life in them.

The Devils started the third period with a good amount of grade A scoring chances but could not burry it in the back of the net. The Devils played a lot of dump and chase hockey hoping it would work. To try to have a lot of offensive zone possession, but the senators were able to break up a lot of passes or win puck battles in the corners and play a good physical brand of hockey.

The Devils had a goal by Jesper Boqvist to end the shutout until it was overturned by goaltender interference. The Devils ended the shutout with a goal by Arseny Gritsyuk. Shortly after though, Kleven scored an empty net goal for the Senators making it 4-1 to put the nail in the coffin. Ottawa outshot the Devils 30-20. Ullmark’s stellar performance was the key factor in Ottawa’s win.

The Devils will look to bounce back in a win column when they face the Detroit Red Wings this Tuesday at Little Caesars Arena, with the puck drop set for 6:00 P.M.
