NEWARK, N.J. - The New Jersey Devils took on the Washington Capitals tonight at home for a Metropolitan matchup. The Devils entered tonight’s game 5-2-0, leading their division, while Washington is tied for fifth place at 3-2-1. Unfortunately, the latter were able to snag an overtime victory tonight, beating New Jersey 6-5.

The Devils took the lead early when Erik Haula netted one past Capitals’ goaltender Logan Thompson, with two former Devils who made their way back home this offseason getting assists (Stefan Noesen and Tomas Tatar). Washington answered back immediately when Tom Wilson snuck one past Jacob Markstrom with the assist from Conor McMichael, bringing the game to an early 1-1 tie.

Almost right after, McMichael answered for his own this time, with Tom Wilson and Jakob Chychrun getting the assists. New Jersey was granted a power play first tonight after a roughing call from Chychrun, but failed to capitalize on the chance.

Four minutes later, Washington’s Alex Ovechkin netted one, with John Carlson and Dylan Strome getting the assists. The Capitals were sent to their first power play of the night following a slashing call by Erik Haula, but the Devils penalty kill unit came out on top. The first period of play ended with Washington ahead 3-1 over New Jersey.

The Devils were down but not out just yet. Nico Hischier miraculously found the back of the net twice just ten seconds apart from one another, giving Noesen his second assist of the night, while Timo Meier got his first assist of the game on the second goal.

But Washington’s offense was buzzing, and managed to net two more just five minutes apart. The first was from Andrew Mangiapane, his first of the season, handing out assists to Trevor van Reimsdyk and Aliaksei Protas. Twelve minutes into second period play, Dylan Strome ripped one past Markstrom to put Washington ahead by two, with another assist from van Reimsdyk. The second period ended 5-3, with New Jersey being outshot 25-20.

Yet once again, the Devils stormed back again. Dawson Mercer struck first in the final period, ripping a shot on the top shelf to bring the deficit down to one. New Jersey was sent to their second power play where Dougie Hamilton sniped one past Logan Thompson to tie the game 5-5. A high stick from Curtis Lazar was called late in the period, sending Washington to another power play. Washington failed to score on the man advantage, and as the final period ended 5-5, this game was sent to overtime!

The sudden death situation had everyone at The Rock on the edge of their seats. Unfortunately, due to a faulty line change, Washington was able to get the jump on the Devils, where Tom Wilson was able to net the game winning goal. The Devils will take on the Tampa Bay Lightning at home this Tuesday, where they’ll be looking to bounce back from tonight's loss.
