by Darren Worrell

Welcome back to Darren’s Takes, the weekly column where I analyze and predict key NBA games scheduled for Mondays and Tuesdays while highlighting pivotal player matchups. I hope you’ve enjoyed the season so far, and I’m excited to bring you this week’s edition!

Let’s rewind to Week 7—a tough stretch for several teams, but none more so than the Lakers. Last week, they sat comfortably in sixth place in the Western Conference standings. Fast forward to today, and they have dropped four spots to 10th. They need to regroup and make serious adjustments to stay in playoff contention.

But enough about past disappointments. Week 8 is here, bringing new takes and fresh matchups. While this week’s schedule may not feature a slew of marquee games, a few key matchups and player showdowns are worth watching. Without further ado, let’s dive into this week’s takes.

Monday’s Key Games:

New York Knicks vs. Toronto Raptors (USA vs. Canada)

The New York Knicks enter this intriguing matchup with a revamped roster that has transformed them into a competitive force in the Eastern Conference. Sitting fourth in the standings, the Knicks have been in great form. Led by Jalen Brunson, the team has found an offensive rhythm, while defensive standouts like OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges keep opponents in check. The addition of Karl-Anthony Towns has bolstered their inside-out game, complemented by Josh Hart’s relentless hustle and energy.

The Toronto Raptors, on the other hand, are still searching for their identity this season. Currently 14th in the Eastern Conference, the Raptors showcase a revamped lineup with eight players regularly scoring in double figures. RJ Barrett has taken a major step forward, leading the team, while Scottie Barnes adds versatility as a playmaking forward. Jakob Poeltl anchors the paint with rebounding and rim protection.

Toronto’s supporting cast features sharpshooter Gradey Dick, high-energy contributors like Immanuel Quickley and Chris Boucher, and experienced veterans Kelly Olynyk and Garrett Temple. Promising young talents such as Ochai Agbaji and Davion Mitchell round out a roster with a balanced mix of scoring and defense. This matchup promises to be an exciting clash of styles and depth.

Key Matchup: Jalen Brunson vs. RJ Barrett

Jalen Brunson, the Knicks' floor general, has been the driving force behind their offense. His ability to control the tempo and create opportunities for his teammates makes him an indispensable part of the team. Meanwhile, RJ Barrett is enjoying a breakout season for the Raptors, showcasing improved shooting and playmaking. As the team’s leading scorer, averaging 23.3 points per game, Barrett is a tough player to stop when he finds his rhythm. Both will aim to dictate the game’s flow in this pivotal matchup.

Darren’s Prediction:

After missing the mark last week, I’m playing it safe this time. The Knicks are the better team, and I believe they’ll prove it. Final score: Knicks 115, Raptors 106.

Tuesday’s Key Games:

Orlando Magic vs. Milwaukee Bucks (The Superstars vs. The Veterans)

The Emirates NBA Cup has reached the quarterfinals, pitting two teams at very different stages of development against each other.

The Orlando Magic have been the surprise of the season, staying competitive despite early setbacks. Losing star forward Paolo Banchero to injury earlier in the year was a significant blow, but the team rallied. Now, their challenge grows even steeper with Franz Wagner—who had stepped up in Banchero’s absence—out indefinitely with a similar injury.

With two key players sidelined, the Magic need others to step up. Jalen Suggs, the team’s third-leading scorer, must embrace a larger role, using his energy and scoring ability to lead the offense. Cole Anthony, a reliable spark off the bench, will also need to deliver his best. Veteran Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, a two-time NBA champion, brings defensive intensity and clutch shooting. Although he has been quiet recently, his experience and ability to make big plays will be critical in this high-stakes game.

Meanwhile, the Milwaukee Bucks enter the matchup as established contenders with championship aspirations. Powered by the superstar duo of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard, the Bucks combine explosive scoring with an intimidating defensive presence. With Khris Middleton returning after missing much of the season, Milwaukee adds yet another scoring threat to their lineup.

In this single-elimination setting, the Bucks will look to assert their dominance and take one step closer to adding the NBA Cup to their list of accolades.

Key Matchup: Damian Lillard vs. Jalen Suggs

With the Magic’s stars Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner sidelined, Jalen Suggs will need to step up in a big way. Known for his energy and defensive prowess, Suggs faces the daunting task of guarding Damian Lillard, one of the league’s most dangerous offensive players. Lillard’s deep shooting range and game-changing ability could be the difference-maker for the Bucks. Suggs’ defensive effort and success in limiting Lillard’s impact will be crucial for the Magic to pull off an upset.

Darren’s Prediction:

I’ll admit I was wrong with my takes last week, so I’m playing it safe this time. Nothing against the Magic—they proved they’re for real with a big win over the Suns. However, the Bucks have their big three playing, which is tough for any team to contend with. My prediction: the Bucks win, 120-110.

Dallas Mavericks vs. Oklahoma City Thunder (No. 1 vs. No. 2)

The Mavericks, currently second in the Western Conference, are led by none other than Luka Dončić. Dončić has been a dominant force all season, showcasing elite scoring, rebounding, and playmaking. As the undisputed leader, he thrives in crucial moments. Paired with Kyrie Irving—arguably one of the NBA’s best point guards—the Mavericks boast one of the league’s most formidable backcourts. Together, Dončić and Irving create matchup nightmares for any opponent, making Dallas a tough team to beat.

The Thunder, meanwhile, have been one of this season’s biggest surprises, thanks to the stellar play of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Gilgeous-Alexander’s smooth offensive game and elite defensive skills make him a dynamic two-way player. Tasked with matching Dončić while leading his team, he is pivotal to Oklahoma City’s success. The Thunder also benefit from a deep roster featuring young talents like Jalen Williams and Luguentz Dort. For Oklahoma City to secure a win, their defensive efforts will need to slow Dončić, while offensive contributions from Gilgeous-Alexander and emerging players like Isaiah Hartenstein and Aaron Wiggins will be key.

With both teams thriving offensively, this game could turn into a shootout. The team that executes better on both ends of the court will have the upper hand.

Key Matchup: Luka Dončić vs. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

This star-studded duel pits two of the league’s most dynamic and versatile players against each other. Dončić, with his size, court vision, and scoring ability, is a constant threat. His playmaking can dismantle defenses and set up teammates for easy baskets. Meanwhile, Gilgeous-Alexander has established himself as one of the NBA’s premier two-way players. His ability to attack the basket, finish through contact, and disrupt opponents on defense makes him a handful on both ends of the floor. This matchup will likely decide the game’s outcome.

Darren’s Prediction:

This is one of those games that’s tough to call. While Oklahoma City boasts more depth and a strong defensive presence, Luka Dončić is the kind of player who can take over a game and carry his team in critical moments. The Mavericks will rely on his brilliance, and despite the Thunder’s defensive toughness, I predict Dallas will edge out a close win, 125-120.

That’s it for this week’s Darren’s Takes! Be sure to check back next week for more key matchups, predictions, and insights. Have a great week!
