Week 13 delivered plenty of action, but the highlight was the rematch between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Oklahoma City Thunder. Fans buzzed over the No. 1 seed clash, but Cleveland was stunned in a 42-point blowout. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander erupted for 40 points, while Cleveland’s top scorers were quiet. Now, onto Week 14—let’s dive into this week’s matchups, predictions, and hot takes.
Monday’s Key Game: Timberwolves vs. Grizzlies
The Minnesota Timberwolves (22-20) sit 8th in the Western Conference, tied with Sacramento. After a 124-117 loss to Cleveland on Jan. 18, Anthony Edwards will need to lead the team with his scoring and leadership to secure a win.
Memphis (27-15) is 3rd in the West and coming off a dominant 140-112 win over the Spurs on Jan. 17. Ja Morant leads with explosive playmaking, while Desmond Bane has been key in scoring. Memphis’s depth, with 12 players averaging over 7.5 points, has been vital to their success.
Key Matchup: Anthony Edwards vs. Ja Morant
Edwards’ strength, shooting, and defense face a challenge from Morant’s speed and creativity. Both can take over games, and the standout player will likely lead their team to victory.
Darren’s Prediction:
Morant and Bane’s dynamic play will overpower the Timberwolves, with Memphis’ depth and energy sealing the win. Final score: Grizzlies 125, Timberwolves 117.
Thursday's Key Game: Boston Celtics vs. Los Angeles Lakers
The defending champion Boston Celtics (29-13) are second in the Eastern Conference, led by MVP-candidate Jayson Tatum (27.7 PPG, 9.3 RPG, 5.4 APG) and Finals MVP Jaylen Brown (23.3 PPG). The Celtics also boast depth, with four other players in double figures.
The Lakers (22-18) are sixth in the West, fueled by LeBron James (23.8 PPG, 8.9 APG) in his 22nd season and Anthony Davis (25.6 PPG, 11.8 RPG, 2.2 BPG). But to topple the Celtics, they’ll need strong support from their role players.
Key Matchup: Jayson Tatum vs. LeBron James
Tatum's scoring and big-game ability will be tested against LeBron's IQ, leadership, and brilliance in a battle between a young star and a legend.
Darren’s Prediction:
LeBron and AD will challenge the Celtics, but Boston's depth, defense, and clutch experience will prevail. Final score: Celtics 115, Lakers 112.
Friday’s Key Game: Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Philadelphia 76ers
The Cavaliers, one of the East’s top teams, lead the league in efficiency. Donovan Mitchell averages 23.1 points and 4.5 assists, while Darius Garland adds 21.2 points and 6.8 assists. Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen anchor a strong defense.
The 76ers, struggling at 11th in the East, rely on Tyrese Maxey, who averages 26.4 points, 5.8 assists, and 2.0 steals. Joel Embiid, the team’s second-leading scorer at 24.4 points, will miss the game, leaving Philly short on interior defense. Paul George and Kelly Oubre must step up for a chance at victory.
Key Matchup: Donovan Mitchell vs. Tyrese Maxey
Mitchell, a proven star, faces rising talent Maxey in a battle of contrasting styles. Mitchell’s three-level scoring and experience meet Maxey’s quickness and energy. If Mitchell heats up from deep, it could be tough for Philly to keep pace. Maxey’s speed, however, could challenge Cleveland’s slower play.
Darren’s Prediction:
Without Embiid, the Sixers will struggle against Cleveland’s interior strength. Mitchell and Garland lead the Cavs to a 115-100 win.
That’s it for this week’s Darren’s Takes! Check back next week for more matchups, predictions, and hot takes. Enjoy the games!
