A new week means a new edition of Darren and Vic’s Takes. For this edition, Darren and Victor decided to switch things up. A lot has happened in this first round, and they are here to talk about the biggest storylines within each conference.

Darren: Western Conference Storylines

Lakers Up 3-0 with a Possible Sweep Opportunity

In the Western Conference, a lot has been going on, and some of the series have been surprising to watch. For one, I’m a big LeBron fan, and of course this is a great Lakers team, but before coming into the series, I thought the Rockets had it in the bag.

For one, they have a great young team and arguably one of the best scorers in the NBA, Kevin Durant, as their leader. On top of that, two of the Lakers' key starters, Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, have both been out with injuries.

However, this series has not gone as expected. Kevin Durant only played one game due to a reported bone bruise.

Luke Kennard, Marcus Smart and LeBron James, have come up big in this series, which is exactly why the Lakers are on the verge of a sweep, but can they pull it off? Or will Houston force a game five back in Los Angeles?

Timberwolves hold a 3-1 series lead against the Nuggets

This is another series that is always cinema. During the regular season, they played four times, and the Nuggets won three of those games, but in the playoffs, that does not really matter. It’s 0-0 when the playoffs start.

In game one, the Nuggets got the best of the Timberwolves, with Jamal Murray dropping 30 and Jokic dropping a 25-point, 13-rebound, 11-assist triple-double to give Denver a 1-0 series lead.

The Timberwolves fought back in a big way: Anthony Edwards scored 30 points in game two and Ayo Dosunmu went off for 25 in game three, putting Minnesota up 2-1 in the series.

Game four was the game of storylines. It was not a good sight for Timberwolves fans, because not even a minute into the game, guard Donte DiVincenzo went down with a torn Achilles.

In the second quarter, things got worse for Timberwolves as star guard Anthony Edwards went down with a knee injury, exactly what you don’t want if you're Minnesota. Sources say Edwards suffered a left knee hyperextension and bone bruise, and he will miss a significant amount of time.

As the game continued, fans would expect the Nuggets to dominate the rest of the way, but that did not happen. Instead, a bench player put up 43 points, the most by a reserve in over 50 years. That player was Ayo Dosunmu, who completely took over the game and led the Timberwolves to a 3-1 series lead.

The question is, can the Timberwolves get it done in Denver without their key starters, or will the Nuggets bounce back and find a way back into this series?

Victor: Eastern Conference Storylines

The Detroit Pistons have a problem. Someone other than Cade Cunningham better get going, and it needs to happen ASAP. This is not the quintessential first seed team we are typically accustomed to seeing. However, the same can be said about the Magic not being a typical eight seed.

Orlando dealt with injuries to stars throughout the year, and many believe the Pistons overachieved in the regular season, taking advantage of injury riddled rosters throughout the conference.

It is now starting to show as Orlando’s length and physicality has startled Detroit into poor three-point shooting. Jalen Duren has also struggled in this series with his scoring.

Both Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner have been an effective duo, but Desmond Bane’s value that Orlando traded for in the offseason is finally starting to excel, as in games three and four his three-point shooting was red hot and he looked like the best player on the floor during several stretches.

The Pistons were down 3-1 facing elimination in game five. Cade Cunningham erupted for 45 points on 13-23 shooting and 5-8 from three, he put the team on his back to secure the W.

Banchero did respond with 45 points of his own as Franz Wagner was out of this one with a calf injury. The Magic still lead 3-2 with game six on Friday.

Up next: the New York Knicks. After taking game one against the Atlanta Hawks, the Knicks dropped the next two against Atlanta to go down 2-1 in the series. Each loss was only by one point, Mikal Bridges missed the go-ahead game winner for game two.

However, game two was a Knicks collapse on the defensive end that allowed the 34 year old veteran CJ McCollum to drop 32 points, as he was picking his matchups on smaller defenders like Brunson to wreak havoc.

Game three in Atlanta was a similar story, except the Knicks were down by as much as 18 points to start this game off. The shooting and offense just looked completely off, and that was evident on defense too as they seemed disconnected.

However, they came out much more prepared and aggressive in the second half and had a three-point lead with 1:03 left in the game. Jalen Johnson and McCollum hit the daggers in that one to win 109-108 and take a 2-1 lead.

Hart and Bridges combined for one point in a combined 61 minutes in that game. The Knicks were in desperation mode in game four, and they responded to the challenge with a very physical response that startled Atlanta.

The Knicks tied it up in game four in Atlanta winning 114-98, leaning off of Karl-Anthony Towns' Triple Double. A spectacular performance from Jalen Brunson back home in New York for game five, where he put up 39 points and 8 assists helped them take a 3-2 lead with a strong 29-point victory. Game six will be tonight April 30 at 7:00 P.M.
