SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall Pirates (7-9) pulled off a 5-3 win over the Georgetown Hoyas (8-6) earlier today. The first game of BIG EAST play for the Seton Hall Pirates couldn’t have gone much better.
The effort came mostly due to Kelsey Carr. Carr pitched all seven innings for the Pirates, completely shutting out the Hoyas in the first three innings. Additionally, in the first inning, Carr had a two-run homer which jumped the Pirates out to an early 2-0 lead.
The Hall would extend that lead with another two-run home run in the third, this one from Taylor Hill. The Pirates had a 4-0 lead before the Hoyas even had a base runner.
Georgetown was able to settle down in the top of the fourth inning by scoring two. Yet Seton Hall would score again off of an error by the Hoyas right fielder to make it 5-2 at the start of the fifth.
The Hoyas were unable to overcome the stellar pitching by Carr and an excellent defense behind her. They scored one in the top of the seventh but the game would soon end there at 5-3, giving the Pirates a win to kick off their conference play.
Along with Carr and Hill’s home runs, Katey Brennan got on base within three of her four at-bats, scoring on both of the previously-mentioned home runs. Angelina Benitez got on base with a walk and had a great outing on the bases, stealing second on a wild pitch and scoring on an error in shallow right field. Benitez’s base running put the absolute nail in the coffin and kept this game out of reach for the Hoyas.
From the Hoyas’ dugout, Claire Turner had the best day at the plate, going 2-4 and scoring on one of them. The Hoyas' starting pitcher Sage Hager struggled through the first three innings, giving up four earned runs before being swapped in the middle of the third inning for Julia Parker. Parker only gave up one run in the four innings she pitched.
This is just the first of the three game weekend series with Georgetown. The teams will play tomorrow at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 12 p.m. Whether the Hoyas’ loss can be attributed to today's weather, the journey from Georgetown, or the shock of two-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection Carr working them on both ends, they will certainly need to adapt for tomorrow's game and the rest of this weekend.
