Are the Canadiens Having a Cinderella Season?

A team you might not be talking about enough is the Montreal Canadiens. The Canadiens are on a surprising playoff push, having not made the playoffs since 2021, when they lost in the Stanley Cup Finals. With contributions from both veterans and younger players, the Canadiens are not only competing but also becoming a source of joy for their fans.
Since mid-December, the Canadiens have gone from being dead last in the Eastern Conference to just points out of a playoff spot. A key reason for this turnaround is rookie goaltender Jakub Dobeš, who has played six games with a 5-1 record, a 1.93 GAA (Goals Against Average), and a .933 save percentage. Patrik Laine has also contributed with 14 points in his last 17 games after missing the start of the season due to a knee injury.
Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis faced heavy criticism when the team was at the bottom of the standings, largely due to defensive struggles and allowing too many goals. However, players like Cole Caufield, who has 47 points in 50 games this season, have helped turn things around. Following a rough start with a record of 11-16-3, the Canadiens bounced back dramatically, achieving a 13-5-2 record to reach 24-21-5.
The sustainability of their recent success will be important as they face consistently strong teams and approach the playoffs. If the Canadiens maintain their current form, they could clinch a playoff spot. The performance of key players and their resilience under pressure will be crucial as the season progresses.
Another young player to watch is Lane Hudson, who has emerged as an elite puck-moving defenseman. The goalie tandem of Dobeš and Montembeau has given the Canadiens confidence in the net. Both goalies have made key saves in close games, helping turn tight matchups into wins. If this strong goaltending continues, the Canadiens could be a surprise playoff contender.
The Canadiens' best players, including Patrik Laine, Cole Caufield, and Kirby Dach, have consistently supported the team's success. Their continued performances will be vital as the playoff race intensifies.
