Brazil vs. Japan Recap

In the first round of the Knockout Stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Brazil eliminated Japan, making them the second team out in the round of 32. A stoppage time goal by Gabriel Martinelli in the 95th minute of the game prevented a draw between the two teams, extending Brazil’s winning streak and sending the Samurai Blue out of the tournament.

The game started off strong on Japan’s end. They were incredibly disciplined and strategic defensively. They weren’t just playing on their end of the field though, they were incredibly clinical on offense as well. After a defensive error by Brazil’s Danilo, Japan’s Kaishū Sano intercepted the ball and snuck a goal from outside the box past Alisson Becker, giving Japan the 1-0 lead. Japan retained a strong showing throughout the rest of the half, frustrating Brazil offensively and forcing them into a few more mistakes that thankfully for Brazil did not lead to any more goals against them.

However, in the second half, Brazil came back with some of the fire that they are known for. In the 56th minute, after a beautiful cross from Gabriel Magalhães, Casemiro was able to make the equalizing goal. This goal really spurred on the Brazilian National Team. Minutes after Casemiro’s goal, Vinícius Júnior nearly made another goal, but a fingertip save from Japan’s goalie Zion Suzuki prevented Brazil taking the lead. Brazil had already been making use of their bench, bringing in Endrick. Japan, feeling the pressure now from Brazil, started making more and more substitutions attempting to try new things to counter the Brazilian offense.

After an already intense and exhausting game crept into an extra-time period, Brazil’s patient, yet fierce midfield forced Japan’s defense deep. Bruno Guimarães threaded a pass from midfield to Gabriel Martinelli in the box, where Martinelli sent the ball into the inside of the post, where it bounced into the goal, securing Brazil’s win 2-1. It was an incredibly intense and nailbiting game that resulted in 2 yellow cards for Brazil and 3 for Japan. Japan heads home after a hard fought game and wonderfully played tournament. They ended up being ranked second overall in Group F during the group stage. Brazil now stands to play Norway July 5th as they hope to continue their moment past the round of 16.
