SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. — The Seton Hall baseball team (3-4) picked up a big win in their home opener Tuesday, beating the Wagner Seahawks (3-4) on Tuesday, 14-6.
The Pirates' offense shined with six players recording multi-hit games, including four hits from Kevin Milewski. Seton Hall totaled 17 hits and had scoring chances in nearly every inning.
Patrick Benn made his first start for the Pirates in this midweek game and did not disappoint. He pitched two innings without allowing a hit, with the only base runner coming on a walk in the second. The left-hander set the tone for the rest of Seton Hall’s pitching staff.
The offensive attack began early, with Jimmy Brennan driving in Soldra on a sacrifice fly in the first. The Pirates went on to score in six straight innings, while the bullpen held it down after Benn was taken out.
The bottom of the second saw Milewski drive in Ferri with an RBI single. The next batter, Andrew Bianco, brought in Milewski to extend the Pirates’ lead to 3-0.
The fourth inning proved to be the turning point as the Pirates put up six runs to take a 9-1 lead. Milewski hit a towering home run that landed on top of the parking deck, and the Pirates never looked back.
The offensive barrage continued as Bianco’s RBI in the sixth inning gave the Pirates a commanding 14-1 lead heading into the seventh.
Wagner managed to scratch back, courtesy of a series of walks and wild pitches as Jordan Marot struggled to record outs. Connor Byrne got the Pirates out of the jam in the seventh, while Calabretti closed out the game in the ninth.
The 14-6 win improves Seton Hall to 3-4 on the season.
Wagner continued to battle, making the game longer and tougher than it should have been for Seton Hall. A four-run rally in the seventh only made the final score somewhat respectable.
The Seahawks got a solid effort from Lukas Torres, who went 2-for-4 on the day, showing fight for Wagner. Their offense scored late, drawing walks and pushing across runs to rattle the Pirates' pitching staff slightly.
Seton Hall will be back in action Friday as it travels to the West Coast to take on Cal Poly in a weekend series.
The Mustangs are 2-5 on the season after tough games against Loyola Marymount and UCLA, but they pulled off a shocking upset of No. 1 Texas A&M on Sunday, making them a tough opponent for the Pirates.
