SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall Pirates (10-15) edged out the Saint Peter’s Peacocks (7-16) in a 4-3 victory Wednesday. In a back-and-forth game with multiple lead changes, the Pirates capitalized on situational hitting and leaned on their bullpen to secure the win.
It all started with Alex D’Ambrosio delivering four innings of one-run ball to open the game for the Pirates. The right-hander allowed a leadoff single, but the runner was thrown out attempting to steal by catcher Jimmy Brennan.
After giving up a total of four hits in the first inning, the Pirates played some creative defense to keep the Peacocks off the board. In the following three innings, D’Ambrosio settled into his comfort zone, allowing only one run to the Peacocks.
Saint Peter’s scratched across an unearned run in the fourth after a throwing error by Joey Calabretti. Seton Hall quickly responded, tying the game at 1 on a similar error by Peacocks third baseman Logan Baker.
After Jordan Marot’s scoreless fifth, the Pirates took their first lead. Casey Cumiskey led off with a single and scored on an AJ Soldra triple to right-center. Jimmy Brennan followed with a groundout, bringing Soldra home for an insurance run.
Then up 3-1, Jordan Marot pitched three scoreless innings in relief before exiting in the eighth. Connor Byrne replaced him and allowed Marot’s inherited runner and one of his own to score, tying the game at 3-3. Saint Peter’s used small-ball tactics, including bunts and tag-ups, to apply pressure.
Seton Hall responded immediately in the bottom of the eighth. After a quick out, Kevin Milewski was hit by a pitch, and Aiden Dill entered as a pinch-runner. Magnus Krieger singled to opposite field, moving Dill to third, before Marco Ali’s squeeze bunt put the Pirates back ahead 4-3. Byrne stayed in to close the ninth, sealing the win.
Wednesday was a big midweek win for the Pirates as they look to regain consistency. Additionally, it was a highly encouraging sign to get strong innings from D’Ambrosio, Marot and Byrne. With consistent pitching hard to find for Seton Hall thus far, a tight win in a gritty matchup like this could be a huge confidence booster moving forward.
The Pirates will be back in action on Friday to open a weekend series with Marist looking to build on the momentum from the win. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 4 p.m. Bobby Steiner and Nick Diodato will have the call on WSOU.net.
