SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall Pirates (8-12) took charge on a sunny Wednesday afternoon with a 16-7 win over the Dartmouth Big Green (0-10).
Sophomore Alex D’Ambrosio got the midweek start for the Pirates but struggled in his two innings of work. He allowed one hit and one run while issuing six walks. A heads-up double play by Tommy Manzo helped prevent what could have been a disastrous start for Seton Hall.
Reigning Big East Player of the Week Kevin Milewski recorded the first hit of the game, which could have sparked a Pirates rally if not for teammate Aidan Robbins getting caught trying to steal home. Robbins, a standout sophomore, continued his strong play by going 2-for-3 at the plate with a game-high four RBIs.
Dartmouth struck first in the top of the second inning, as senior outfielder Luke Carroll delivered an RBI single. However, Seton Hall responded in the bottom of the frame with a bases-loaded, no-out situation. Casey Cumiskey drove in the Pirates’ first run to tie the game at 1. Marco Ali followed with a solid hit to give Seton Hall a lead it would not relinquish. The Pirates scored four runs in the inning.
The third inning began with D’Ambrosio being replaced by Connor Byrne, who also struggled. In one of his first at-bats, he gave up a big hit to Jaer Rodriguez, bringing the Big Green back into the game, trailing by just one.
Cumiskey stepped up with a double and two RBIs, including one in the third inning that sparked Seton Hall’s second big run of the game. AJ Soldra and Aidan Robbins also contributed to the offensive outburst, giving the Pirates a four-run cushion entering the fourth inning.
Innings four through eight were quieter for both teams, as the Pirates built a 15-4 lead by the bottom of the fifth. Dartmouth showed a final spark with an Alejandro Puig triple, followed by a big play from Carroll to help trim the deficit. But Seton Hall’s early advantage proved too much for the Big Green to overcome.
In an offensive frenzy, both teams were aggressive at the plate, combining for 23 hits. Despite struggles from both bullpens, Tomas Cestero was a bright spot for the Pirates, recording five strikeouts in just two innings. Nine different Pirates recorded a hit, and 10 players crossed the plate.
Seton Hall will look to build on its momentum heading into a three-game series against Iona this weekend. The Gaels (5-12) are coming off a series win over Mount St. Mary’s. Both teams enter the weekend riding a high, but one will have to come back down to earth.
The series opener is set for 4 p.m. at Mike Sheppard Sr. Stadium. Tune in to WSOU.net, where Michael Bellifemini and Nick Diodato will have the call.
