SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The #21 Seton Hall Pirates (5-2-4) struck gold last night against the FIU Panthers (5-5-2) in a 5-0 win. From the start of this game, the Pirates had their foot on the gas and never took it off for the rest of the night, leading in shots, shots on goal, and saves.
Coming into the matchup, Seton Hall came off a slow and dull performance following their game vs. Georgetown, which ended in a draw. This was the second ever faceoff between Seton Hall and FIU, with the previous game ending in a 1-0 Pirates victory last season.
In the first half of the game, FIU started off playing with a ton of physicality and aggressiveness, picking up four fouls in the first ten minutes. However, just a minute after committing a foul, forward Joseph Min scored off an assist from defensemen Sam Bjork, putting the Pirates ahead 1-0.
Not too long after, the Pirates struck again with a goal from midfielder Thomas Sellwood, with the assist coming from defensemen Liam Guske. Seton Hall continued to control play with yet another goal just three minutes later from Bjork, with Sellwood and midfielder Hugo Gerbore picking up the helpers with still twenty minutes left to play.
FIU was quick to scramble for some substitutions, playing slower and more defensive minded before forward Johan Helan picked up a yellow card to close out the half. The Pirates dominated on all sides of the field in the first frame, with FIU picking up eight fouls to Seton Hall’s five.
In the second half, aggression fueled both sides of the play, as FIU picked up another yellow card and tensions started to rise. This time it was on forward Enrique Mutsoli. Fouls seemed to be thrown left and right as the physical play continued to ramp up before quickly slowing down a bit, as there were no shots for nearly 20 minutes, until goalkeeper Matias Molina made back-to-back saves to maintain the lead.
Play turned slow again with another yellow card thrown, this time on Seton Hall defenseman Agustin Resch. Two minutes later, the onslaught was on as Seton Hall added onto their large lead with a goal from midfielder Giacomo Mana, assisted by Guske and midfielder Axel Berglund. Not even five minutes later, forward Mans Saebbo connected with the cherry on top, as he registered his first goal since 2021.
From the get-go, Seton Hall was just in complete control and beat FIU in what was their largest margin of victory this season. FIU appeared dull, slow, and overall, just did not seem prepared for what Seton Hall served. The Pirates will suit up again on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they head to Pennsylvania to take on the Villanova Wildcats.
