This past weekend, the Seton Hall baseball team travelled to Queens, N.Y. to take on the St. John’s Red Storm in a four game weekend series. Coming into this matchup, the Hall had a 13-13 overall record after previously sweeping the Villanova Wildcats 3-0 last weekend.

On Friday night, Seton Hall came out fighting. In the top of the first and second inning, Seton Hall already had an early 2-0 lead. St. John’s then pushed runs in the fourth and fifth inning to tie the game 2-2. Then in the seventh inning, the Pirates weren’t able to muster a run and the Red Storm pulled ahead 3-2. The Hall responded in the eighth with one on base and Sheehan cleared the right center field wall, putting the Pirates ahead, 4-3. St. John’s fought back as they tied the score 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Red Storm would prevail after an RBI double in the 11th inning and take the game 5-4. There was still plenty of opportunity for Pirate success since a Saturday doubleheader and Sunday afternoon matchup were also scheduled.

On Saturday, the Pirates took the doubleheader in a sweep. They were an offensive powerhouse that scored 30 runs over the two-game day. Junior David Testa earned the win on the mound in the first game where he didn’t allow an earned run in 5.1 innings and freshman Drew Conover didn’t allow a hit in 1.2 innings to finish off the game. The Pirates took game one 11-1.

In the second game, Seton Hall offense was the same but defensively they needed to dig themselves out of a hole since St. John’s put up three runs in the bottom of the first. Junior Joe Cinnella was then brought in for relief to keep the Red Storm under control. Junior Alex Clyde finished the day with six RBIs, a home run, and four runs scored over the two games. Junior Jerry Huntzinger went 5-for-9 with five doubles and five RBIs. Senior Casey Dana went three-for-six with five RBIs and a home run. The Pirates dominated and took the second game, 19-4.

The four-game set concluded on Sunday afternoon. The game was slow offensively and defensively for both Seton Hall and St. John’s. The first bit of action didn’t take place until the seventh inning where the Red Storm scored 4 runs by Lazzaro, Hogan, Glancy, and Orbon consecutively. The Pirates tried to fight back in the eighth inning when two runs were scored but the Pirates could not make a comeback in the ninth. The Red Storm took the fourth game 4-2.

The weekend series was split, 2-2. Seton Hall improves to 15-15 on the season with an 8-3 Big East conference record. The Pirates will be back at home this week for a matchup against Lafayette on Wednesday and then a three game weekend series against Georgetown.
