The Seton Hall Pirates women’s soccer team improved their Big East record to 3-3-2 and their overall record to 5-6-2 with a 1-0 win over the Marquette Golden Eagles (6-6-1, 1-4-0 Conf.) Thursday evening.

Sophomore Natalie Tavana notched the go-ahead goal in the 81st minute for her third goal of the season.

The match got off to a slow start, as neither team had a shot on goal until the 13th minute, when senior goalie Grace Gordon saved a shot from Marquette forward Josie Bieda.

Marquette would total five shots, but only one on goal, before freshman Sarah Mitchell recorded the Pirates’ first shot, this one on goal, in the 25th minute.

Both teams would get a few more shots in before halftime, but none of them found the back of the net. Despite leading the Pirates 7-4 in total first half shot attempts, the Golden Eagles trailed the Pirates in shots on goal 3-2.

Marquette started the second half strong, controlling much of the possession for the first 20 minutes of the second half. In that stretch, Marquette held the Pirates shotless, while attempting six shots (three on goal) of their own.

The Pirates started to gain momentum around the 71st minute when they got their first corner kick of the game. Over the next five minutes, the Pirates would get shots from junior Brina Micheels and senior Naomi Welch, as well as a shot on goal from sophomore Sophie Liston.

In the 81st minute, a shot by Tavana got blocked out of bounds for a corner kick. After keeping possession on the corner kick, Tavana was able to find the back of the net for the first and only goal of the game.

Lipton and junior Alex Fuggle were both credited with their first assists of the season on the goal.

The Pirates were able to survive a pair of Marquette shot attempts in the closing minutes to hold on for their fifth win of the season.

“[Tonight’s win] feels amazing,” said Tavana postgame. “We worked hard as a team throughout all 90 minutes.”

Marquette out-shot the Pirates 15-9, but the teams each had five shots on the goal.

Gordon added four saves, bringing her season total up to 59. Thursday’s shutout was her sixth clean sheet of the season, the most in the Big East.

Chloe Olson also saved four shots for Marquette.

The Pirates return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they travel to Washington, D.C. to take on the No. 18 Georgetown Hoyas (8-1-4, 4-0-1 Conf.). Their next home game will be on Oct. 13 when the Creighton Bluejays come into town.
