The Best Uniforms in CFB: Week Eight

The Rams celebrate in their new uniforms inspired by the Colorado state flag.

I bring the unfortunate news that there are only five more regular season weeks left in this college football season. This week saw three teams, Syracuse, Ole Miss, and UCLA, all have their undefeated seasons upended.

This Saturday also assisted the case that the Pac-12 Conference is one of the best conferences in college football, only second to the SEC.

Lastly and most importantly, there were several teams that showcased some of the best football uniforms this week, including some debuts for a couple.

This week’s honorable mentions include a trio of Big XII conference games: Texas at Oklahoma State, Kansas State at TCU. and West Virginia at Texas Tech. The one that just missed the cut, mainly due to Hawaii lacking creativity, was the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors at Fort Collins, CO facing the Colorado State Rams.

The Rams’ Colorado flag themed uniforms, from helmet to shoes, were so good that it felt like it was their main regular all-white uniforms. If the Rams never wear these again, I am not kidding when I say that there needs to be a full-on shut down in the state of Colorado until we know what is going on.

With that, here are your best uniform matchups of Week Eight.

Number Three: Kansas at Baylor

Baylor tops Kansas in a beautiful matchup of uniforms.

After multiple weeks, it is official that the pedals have fallen off the Kansas Jayhawks’ rose. Having started 5-0, they have now lost to the TCU Horned Frogs, Oklahoma Sooners, and now, the Baylor Bears.

In their road trip to Waco, TX, the Jayhawks and Bears pulled off the dark color-dark color uniform matchup that is rarely seen. For Kansas they showed off their new white helmets that depicts the head of the Jayhawk. The pattern is of similar variations that have been worn in recent years.

The only difference is they went with a colorless pattern for the Jayhawk that gives major “Mr. Stork” from Dumbo vibes. They added it to their baby blue jerseys that have the white Jayhawk head on the shoulder pads as well. Having worn it last year, they added it with the blue pants.

While I am not the biggest fan of the three different color combos, it is a trio that seems to work for some odd reason.

As for the Baylor Bears, they went with the all-greens that were previous winners of this column in Week Two, and for good reason. Their all greens with gold trim look perfect at their home, McLane Stadium.

They put the cherry on top with their retro lids having the cartoon bear with the shipmen’s hat. In the Big XII, there are not many other uniforms that can beat the Baylor Bears’ all green.

Number Two: Washington at California

In a game that I am sure was blowing up the Nielsen Ratings, the Washington Huskies traveled to Berkley to face the California Golden Bears, whose mascot is an animal that is extinct in their home state of California.

Now Cal’s unis are nothing noteworthy. It was their standard blue-gold-blue trio. The two colors can be varied for any three of the uniform pieces at Cal, and it would not have anyone jumping out of their seats.

As for the Huskies, they are the complete opposite. They do a great job of not being vanilla, as well as not being replicas of Oregon. They do wear their standard purple and gold, along with their regular whites.

However, they do possess some pizzazz, such as their all-blacks and all-purples, which includes the purple chrome helmets. They showed that quite well with their Husky Royalty all-whites. It consists of white on white, with the numbers in gold, and the helmet being a golden chrome.

Number One: No. 9 UCLA vs. No. 10 Oregon

The winner for the week is clearly the Pac-12 conference game of the week between the UCLA Bruins and the Oregon Ducks, where the Ducks made their case for a College Football Playoff spot.

For UCLA, there uniforms were their traditional road gold-white-gold. While their uniforms don’t have a lot of variation, I feel that they are a program that does not need to step away from their primary colors, like their cross-town rival, USC.

As for the Ducks, they are the Kardashians of College Football uniforms. With UCLA appearing to stay status quo with their jerseys, Oregon seems to love experimenting when they face the Bruins.

Just last year, they wore their “Oreo cookies and cream” jerseys and pants against UCLA. This week was nothing different. In what seems like their five billionth new combo, they wore their “Stomp Out Cancer” uniforms, which is an all-black and pink combo that has a lot going on.

For starters, they obviously have the large pink numbers. Second, they have neon yellow dots on the shoulder pads. In addition to that, their helmets’ wings have a fade from dark pink to hot pink. Lastly, their cleats’ spikes are completely hot pink.

With their long history of falling flat on their faces when showcasing a new uniform, the Oregon equipment team did as good of job making these uniforms as the Ducks did beating the Bruins this past Saturday.
