The Pirates fell to Marquette in a sloppy 3-0 loss.

Seton Hall Athletics

The Seton Hall Pirates (13-5) and the Marquette Golden Eagles (15-1) went head-to-head Saturday afternoon in South Orange, New Jersey. Unfortunately, it was a quick match for the Pirates as they were swept by the Golden Eagles, 3-0.

Although the Hall battled till the end, Marquette dominated all three sets, while only allowing the Pirates to score 50 points in total, with no score reaching the 20-mark.

The Golden Eagles came to South Orange, and they meant business. Marquette started off each set strong all thanks to the backline and defense.

They racked up kills with ease and Seton Hall failed under pressure. Within the first set the game was tied 6-6, until the Golden Eagles responded with five straight points after the Pirates had just caught up.

It would take the Hall to be down 10-6 to be forced into a timeout to try and regroup. It all went downhill from there, as Marquette took a commanding lead at 16-8.

Both Taylor Jakubowski and Maddie Klungel worked hard to keep the Pirates in the opening set, but they would fall short to the Golden Eagles, 25-18.

However, this did not kill the Pirates’ spirit, as they had the home-court advantage and loyal fans to give them as much energy as they needed going into set two.

The Pirates took an early 10-9 lead to start the set, but the Eagles would respond back with a 10-2 run that would put them up 19-12.

Now the Hall would have to play catchup if they wanted to stay in the game and they did, cutting the lead down to 22-17. This did not deter Marquette as they took control of the set and finished the Pirates off, 25-18.

Going into the third set, Seton Hall needed to have more defense than what they were showing if they wanted to stay in the game.

The Pirates would start off strong, scoring the first four points of the set, but Marquette quickly took over once again and scored six-unanswered points.

This deflated the Hall’s spirit, and Marquette capitalized on this by going on a 13-1 run. Jenna Walsh, however, would not go down without a fight for the Pirates as she gained some points back through service aces.

She would end up cutting the score down 14-7. Marquette responded with an 8-2 run that put the set and the match out of reach.

The Pirates look to bounce back against St. Johns (13-6) on Wednesday in Queens, NY. Look for a recap of that game right here on WSOU.net!
