The Seton Hall Pirates took a business trip to California for spring break where they faced off against the California Baptist University Lancers. After what seemed like a lopsided series after two games suddenly turned out to be a hard-fought result, with both teams swinging and both teams responding. But the Pirates came up just short of a series split after four games, as they went down three games to one.

Seton Hall started off the series strong and took an early 4-0 lead against CBU, but the tone quickly shifted as CBU quickly responded with a three-run inning of their own to cut Seton Hall’s lead to one.

From there it was all CBU, as Seton Hall had no answer to their bats. CBU took a commanding 13-4 lead which carried them through the rest of the game.

Game two was a much closer affair than game one was for the Pirates. However, they still fell to the Lancers 4-3.

It was a seesaw affair the entire game. CBU’s scoring was responded with the Pirates scoring, but the Lancers barely outlasted the Pirates as they scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh inning which ended up being the difference of the game.

The Pirates rose back to life in for the third game of this series as pitcher Cole Hansen pitched a dominant game receiving the win and holding CBU to just one run during his time on the mound.

But pitching wasn’t the only recipe for success in this game for the Pirates. The bats were just as dominant for Seton Hall as they scored 12 runs for the game, including a great performance from Max Viera who had a three-hit night.

But it wasn’t just Viera; the Pirates put on a team effort against CBU as they had 10 hits as a team including a massive five-run inning in the third that the Pirates took all the way to the last out.

It all came down to the last match as the Pirates looked to avenge their first two losses of the series and finish with a split. The game would be representative of the series at large.

While two of these three games have been lopsided affairs one team has not been dominant as a whole in this series. The final game was another back-and-forth outing that resulted in a tie game through seven innings.

The seventh inning appeared to have the potential for the Pirates to break the game open. Seton Hall had the bases loaded with one out, but back-to-back strikeouts would get CBU out of the jam and keep them in the game.

The Lancers took advantage, scoring a go-ahead run on three-straight singles in the home half of the seventh. CBU would go on to score four runs in the seventh and that would be enough to carry them for the rest of the game. The Pirates would lose the game 8-4 and fall in the series 3-1.
