It was a long game on Saturday as the New York Red Bulls hosted the San Jose Earthquakes at Red Bull Arena.

The first half was quite slow, as there was nothing much in the way of offense. Both teams had some trouble in the middle third getting good touches into the offensive third of the field, that can be noted to the Red Bulls defense throughout the first half.

Though they had to play good defense as they were behind for much of the first half in ball possession, which lead to not as many shots for the Red Bulls as the Earthquakes, however it felt like every time the Red Bulls got into the offensive third.

In the first half they had eight goal attempts. There were only two cards given out during the first half of the match with Omir Fernandez picking one up in the 11th minute of play, as well as Rodrigues in the 24th minute.

There was only one attempt that felt as though it would go in, late in the first half the Red Bulls’ defense collapsed, but a shot went a bit high and banked off the crossbar which got a rise out of the crowd in the arena.

The second half was a completely different story however, action kicked off right away as Sean Nealis was given a yellow card in the 45th minute and then two minutes later San Jose’s Judson was given a card as well.

From there, something not often seen in MLS occurred. Without any reasoning, the game took a long break of about 17 minutes after a small scuffle between both teams.

From the media in the stadium to the fans and even some of the players, no one knew exactly what was happening and it got many in the arena upset.

However, after the break, the tie was broken as San Jose’s Cristian Espinoza netted his fourth goal of the season in the 80th minute to make the score 1-0.

The Red Bulls had plenty of time to get the goal back as there was an extra 21 minutes of time added at the end of the second half, some of the most extra time awarded in MLS history.

In the 107th minute, Tom Barlow netted his first goal of the season to tie the game at one a piece. According to many post-game it was the latest goal scored in both New York Red Bulls history and in Major League Soccer regular season history.
