The Seton Hall volleyball squad continued their conference play this past weekend with a match against the DePaul Blue Demons. Heading into the weekend, the Pirates had a record of 12-14 on the season and were coming off of a 3-1 loss against the Marquette Golden Eagles on Friday. DePaul had a 14-11 record and defeated St. John’s, 3-1, also on Friday.

Seton Hall holds a 19-4 lead in the all-time series against the Blue Demons, but DePaul won the last match on Oct. 15, by a score of 3-0. Although, the Blue Demons had been having a pretty average year, just like the Seton Hall Pirates, and this match was sure to be a huge make-or-break situation for both squads.

Seton Hall winning or losing would still make them fall in the bottom four in the Big East rankings. DePaul, on the other hand, would be in contention for the Big East Tournament, so a win for them was a must.

On Saturday night, in the first set, Seton Hall assumed control when they took the lead at 9-8 and kept that momentum going. It was smooth sailing from there, as the Pirates won the first set, 25-16.

DePaul then dominated in the second set—not giving up the lead once. The Blue Demons won the second set, 25-20. It was a back-and-forth match the entire night.

In the third set, Seton Hall came to play, once again having the lead and keeping it until the end. The Pirate won the third set, 25-17.

The fourth set was a fight to the finish, with the Pirates keeping the lead for most of the beginning but DePaul was ready to combat the deficit. They took the lead at 15-13, and the Blue Demons won the fourth set, 25-20.

It was a hard-fought battle for both squads, but Seton Hall just didn’t have as much drive. The fifth set was in favor of DePaul from start to finish, and DePaul won 15-7, and took the match, 3-2.

Perri Lucas led the Pirates with 14 kills, Anna Holland had 22 digs and four assists, and Cagla Bengi had 28 assists and four digs. That was just not enough for what the Blue Demons had in store.

The Pirates will end the weekend with an overall 12-15 record. Seton Hall will look to improve upon this when they host the UConn Huskies for Senior Night at Walsh Gymnasium next Saturday evening at 6 p.m.

After a quick turnaround, they will take on the St. John’s Red Storm next Sunday in Queens, N.Y. at 4 p.m. Be sure to check out the online streams and recaps at wsou.net for all of the coverage of these two matches.
