The Seton Hall women’s volleyball team (9-10, 1-4 conference) lost a close one on the road to the Xavier Musketeers (9-6, 4-1 conference) by a score of three sets to two on Friday night.

The Pirates lost the first set in a very tightly contested affair. They were behind 20-17 but went on a four to one run to even the set up at 21 apiece, with Tsvetelina Ilieva getting the tying kill. However, it wasn’t enough, as the Musketeers went on to win the set 25-23.

The second set was more of the same. After having a two-point lead early, the two teams found themselves all knotted up at 19. The Pirates just couldn’t quite hang on again though and lost the second set in extra time, 26-24.

Things began to turn around for Seton Hall in the third set. The Pirates gained a 21-19 advantage over the Musketeers and were able to hang on to extend the match. They took this one by a score of 25-22.

Set four looked like a completely different match to say the least. Seton Hall came out swinging, gaining a five-point lead early in the set. They maintained that momentum for a long time, extending that lead out to eight with a 20-12 lead. Xavier mounted a comeback of their own; however, bringing it back to 22-19. In the end, Seton Hall would hang on to win 25-21 and force a fifth set.

Again, the Pirates gained a slight advantage early in the set, 7-6. However, Xavier would end up storming back and winning the set 15-13 and therefore winning the match.

Taylor Jakubowski ended the match with 27 assists and 24 digs for Seton Hall, leading the team in both statistical categories. Madison Matheny led the Pirates in kills with 12, and Emilee Turner looked confident in her return, finishing the match with 11 kills, good enough for second on the team. Madison Frusha and Perri Lucas also tallied 10 and nine kills, respectively.

By the end of the match, Xavier finished with 72 kills, while the Pirates mustered together 65, Seton Hall had 102 digs compared to the Musketeers’ 97, and Xavier had 12 blocks to the Pirates’ 10.

The volleyball team is back in action tomorrow when they take on the Butler Bulldogs at the Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indiana. They will be looking to break a two-match skid. Be sure to catch all the action from tomorrow’s beat writer, Chris Ellison, on wsou.net.
