The Seton Hall’s women’s soccer team battled Butler in Indianapolis on the road Sunday, Sept. 26, 2021. Unfortunately, even though the Pirates put up a good fight, the Bulldogs came out victorious, with a final score of 3-1. With the loss, Seton Hall dropped to 6-4 (1-1 conference record) on the season, and Butler improved to an impressive 9-1 record, earning their ninth consecutive victory.

Starting goalie Grace Gordon pulled off some good saves against a strong Butler offense, saving seven shots out the 19 the Bulldogs sent her way. Starting at the 10th minute of game action, she made a great save on a shot from Katie Soderstrom of Butler. Using a full extension from her lift side, she denied the ball from entering the goal to continue the scoreless contest.

However, a foul by Butler in the 15th minute allowed Seton Hall to secure an early goal by Cara Milne-Redhead which was assisted by Laura Hooper. This was Hooper’s first assist of her senior year and sixth overall in her entire Seton Hall career.

The strike from Milne-Redhead during a free kick gave Seton Hall an early lead of one-nil in the 16th minute of the game.

For a while the Seton Hall was able to block any goal attempts by Butler until the 28th minute, when Butler’s Anastasia Savich scored, with assists by Soderstrom and Arianna Jalics. This led to a tie between the Pirates and the Bulldogs, which lasted till the 35th minute. The goal by Butler was scored by Anastasia Savich, with assists coming from Gabby Smith and Abigail Isger. Seton Hall was able to hold off any more Butler scoring opportunities until the end of the first half.

Hoping to try and get the upper hand on the Bulldogs, the Pirates tried to come out strong trying to both score more goals and keep Butler from widening their lead. But it was not long until Butler scored another goal, all thanks to Julia Leonard and Soderstrom of Butler in the 47th minute of play.

The last best chance from the Pirates came during the dwindling minutes of the second half, as Lizzy Kirk received a pass from Milne-Redhead that went wide left before time had expired. The last two goals scored in the game gave Butler the impressive 3-1 advantage over Seton Hall. This was the ultimate nail in the coffin for chances of the Pirates fighting their way back.

It was a valiant effort by the women’s soccer team, but the Bulldogs proved to be tough competition and were victorious over Seton Hall in the end. Next up for the Pirates is matchup on Thursday, Sept. 30 at home against the UConn Huskies at 6 p.m. Heaven Hill and Christian Gardner will have the call from Owen T. Carroll Field.
