Seton Hall defeated St, Johns 3-2 in double overtime, winning their second game of the season and first conference game. Seton Hall entered the game on a five-game skid, and coming off a 3-0 loss to Georgetown, Sunday. St. John’s entered the game 5-2-1 and was coming off a 2-2 draw with Villanova on Sunday.

These two teams met earlier this year when St. Johns won in an overtime thriller 2-1. The first half was back and forth with not many high danger chances. St. John’s played a bit better, as they outshot the Lady Pirates seven to five and had four shots on target compared to Seton Hall’s two.

The best chance of the first half came in the 29th minute, as Zsani Kajan entered the Seton Hall box with only Lauren DiPietro trailing. However, DiPietro was able to throw her left leg in front of the ball as she blocked Kajan’s shot out of play. Other than that, play, the first half was pretty uneventful. A few corners were taken but none endangered either Seton Hall or St. John’s keepers. Most of the attempted offense came through balls over the top, but both sides back lines were in great position to take those long balls away.

The second half started with a St. John’s threating a bit, but when Seton Hall got their first chance of the half, they took it. In the 52nd minute, defender Emily Arellano dribbled up to around midfield and sent a beautiful ball over the top right to forward Naomi Welch’s boot. Welch controlled the ball, took one touch then chipped St. John’s keeper Naya Limpkins to make it 1-0.

However, the Pirates lead would not last long, as in the 59th minute, Kajan took the ball and made some nice dribble moves to move past a few defenders and slotted the ball to the left of Seton Hall keeper, Grace Gordon to even it up at 1-1. St. John’s then proceeded to take the lead only minutes later. In the 60th minute, Jessica Garziano took a cross just inside the box from Addison Hornsey and chested it then volleyed the ball with some heat passed Gordon to give the Johnnies a 2-1 lead.

Seton Hall came back and tied it only four minutes later, and a cross from Cassy Harrigan found the head of Lauren DiPietro who headed the ball to Laura Hooper who slotted it into an open goal to make it 2-2. That would be the rest of the coring for regulation, as great defense by both teams were able to hold out until overtime.

The first overtime period was ten minutes and relatively uneventful, as once again both defenses hunkered down and allowed minimal high danger chances. Seton Hall got the last strike, in the last minute of the game, Hooper received a pass from Harrigan and slotted it home to give Seton Hall their second win of the season 3-2.
