The Seton Hall Pirates lost their first game of the season, 4-0 to the Georgetown Hoyas this afternoon in Washington D.C. Despite starting off the season with a 1-0 road victory against Saint Joseph’s University, the women’s soccer team was unable to secure their first Big East Conference win of the season.

The Hoyas got off to a hot start in the first half, relentlessly attacking Seton Hall’s defense, by getting several attempts to score early on. The first goal of the afternoon came in the 16th minute of the game. The goal was scored by junior midfielder, Devon Lis, scoring her first goal of the 2021 season.

The Hoyas got their second goal of the match in the 26th minute, after an accidental own goal was made by the Pirates. Despite conceding two early goals, sophomore goalie Grace Gordon prevented a potential third first half goal in the 35th minute by saving a shot attempt by Georgetown’s Jenna Royson.

On the other side of the field, the Pirates struggled to adapt to Georgetown’s strong defense. Seton Hall finished the game without having a single shot on Georgetown’s goal, while the Hoyas were able to get off 16 total shots on goal. The only real opportunity the Pirates had to score was early in the first half when they were unable to convert after a corner kick attempt.

The second half of the game was more of the same as the Hoyas continued to overwhelm the Pirate’s defense. They scored their third goal in the 69th minute when sophomore forward Sofie Fox notched her second goal on the season assisted by senior, Jenna Menta. Georgetown’s final goal came close to the end of the game during the 85th minute when sophomore forward Gia Vicari scored her third 2021 goal on an assist from freshman midfielder, Tatum Lenain.

Despite a difficult game for the Pirates, there are still positives to look at from this performance. Out of the 16 shots Georgetown took on goal, Seton Hall only conceded three of them, and the Pirates’ defense also gave up two less corner kicks in the second half.

Luckily, the Pirates will have another chance against Georgetown, when the Hoyas travel to South Orange for the next matchup between these two teams on March 21. The Pirates now shift their focus to their game this Sunday on March 7, where they will face off against St. John’s out in Queens, N.Y.
