Last night, the Seton Hall women’s volleyball team (12-15, 4-9 conference) lost a tough 3-1 match at home against the Marquette Golden Eagles (20-4, 11-2 conference).

During the first part of the initial set, the Golden Eagles kept a consistent three-point lead. By the middle, SHU started to solidify offense on the right side. After a timeout, play surrounded the net, forming high-speed rallies, and blocking was common from both sides.

Soon, the score got up to 24-21 for Marquette. Service errors by the Golden Eagles afforded Seton Hall some time to recover, but the set ended a play later in favor of Marquette, 25-21.

The second set opened on a rally that included a dive by Taylor Jakubowski, resulting in a kill by Carsen Murray, but eventually a Tsvetelina Ilieva kill in response. Hannah Vanden Berg had begun to take charge of the offense for the visitors, but the Pirates still managed to jump out to 9-8, their first lead of the match.

Joint offense by Ilieva, Emilee Turner, and Madison Frusha got Seton Hall to 22-16, with sudden kills from the right and brilliant blocks on the left. The set got tight nearing the end, but the Pirates were able to win, 25-23.

The Pirates started set three scoring points on the left side, but two minutes in, the score was 7-5 for Marquette. The score remained the same until the Ilieva-Turner duo, still leading the way on offense, brought it up to a draw.

Later in the third set, Seton Hall began trailing point-to-point. It would be a while until after a couple of missed serves by the Pirates, Marquette would establish a solid four-point run. Soon, Hope Werch punched it to 23 for Marquette, her 12th kill in the match at that point, bringing things to an edge for the Pirates, who would then lose the set, 25-18.

In the final set, the rallies came back from both sides, and this time spread around the court. Marquette returned to a three-point lead, but by now, exhaustion was noticeable from both teams. Kills and blocks by Ilieva and Frusha brought back the Pirates into the set.

However, the score reached 22-21 for Marquette, until Vaden Berg and company edged out Seton Hall and took the set by a score of 25-22.

Next up for the squad is a 6 p.m. match on Saturday, Nov. 6 against DePaul back at home at the newly renovated Walsh Gymnasium. Be sure to check out the recap for the match here on wsou.net.
