On Sunday afternoon, the Seton Hall women’s soccer team (6-6-0, 1-3-0 conference) lost a difficult 1-0 contest on the road against the Marquette Golden Eagles (7-4-0, 3-1-0). It was tightly contested match from both sides, but the Golden Eagles were able to convert in the second half to push the Pirates back to a .500 record on the season.

In the 28th minute, Seton Hall’s Natalie Tavana had a one-on-one breakaway. but was deflected off the left foot of Marquette’s Mikki Easter in net that proved to be a game-changer for the Golden Eagles. Easter would make another desperation save that flew over the crossbar and allowed for the game to be remained at nil-nil.

Tavana and Sophie Liston, two members of the talented Pirates freshmen core, each contributed two shots apiece by the final whistle, but only Tavana’s would be on net. Another member of the freshman corps, Cara Mile-Redhead, tallied one shot, which now puts her at a team-best 25 shots on the season. On the other side of the pitch, Easter would collect two saves (27 total) that also led to her fifth shutout of the year.

With 21 minutes left in regulation, in the 69th minute, Marquette’s Hailey Block scored her first goal of the season, which was assisted by Elsi Twombly and Rachel Johnson. The Golden Eagles outshot the Pirates 16-8 by the game’s conclusion, which proved to be a reason why Marquette was able to keep up their offensive pressure and secure their seventh win of the season and third in Big East play.

One of the Pirates’ key contributors on defense, goalkeeper Grace Gordon, corralled five saves in net and played solid overall despite the one goal allowed. After three straight shutouts to begin the 2021-22 campaign, she still has played solid as the backbone of the Pirates defense and look for her to be a presence throughout the remainder of the team’s Big East slate.

Next up on deck for the Pirates this week is a return back home to Owen T. Carroll Field, where they will take on the DePaul Blue Demons on Thursday, Oct. 7. The game will kick off at 6 p.m., and this will be the Pirates’ “Pink Game”, where the team will invite the American Cancer Society and have a ceremony at halftime honoring a cancer survivor.

Be sure to listen to Madi Travisano and Joe Matthews break down all the action on wsou.net to see if the Pirates can improve their record to above .500 before taking on Xavier at home on Sunday, Oct. 10.
