It’s time for the battle of New Jersey on the hardwood.

Tonight, the Seton Hall women’s basketball team (1-0) will face Rutgers (1-0) at the Jersey Mike’s Arena, a showdown five years in the making.

The last time these two Jersey foes played was on Dec. 8, 2017, where the Scarlet Knights took down the Pirates 70-45, and Rutgers has emerged victorious in four of the last five matchups.

After the retirement of C. Vivian Stringer in April, who had one of the greatest records in women’s college basketball history, Coquese Washington is now at the helm in Piscataway, N.J. and already 1-0 in her first-year tenure.

On Monday, Rutgers defeated Hofstra 73-68 and saw five different players score in double-digits. Awa Sidibe led the way with 16 points and nine rebounds, Kai Carter also tallied 16 points, and Erica Lafayette, Chyna Cornwell, and Abby Streeter each contributed 11 points in the victory.

The Scarlet Knights as a team shot 54.9% from the field and 4/9 from three. They also outscored Hofstra in the paint by a decent margin, 40-28.

For the Pirates, they opened the 2022-23 season with a 73-39 statement win over Saint Peter’s at Walsh Gymnasium on Monday. Their team defense was in midseason form, as they held the Peacocks to 27.6% shooting and also forced 27 turnovers.

Sidney Cooks was the leader in the stats column with a 16-point, 16-rebound (career-best) double-double, and Sha’Lynn Hagans, the former senior Penn State guard, scored 16 points and collected four steals in her Pirates debut.

Another brand-new Pirate, senior Kae Satterfield from Xavier, tacked on 12 points and nine rebounds, and Lauren Park-Lane opened her senior campaign with 11 points and four assists.

Other Seton Hall newcomers in that matchup included Shailyn Pinkney (freshman), who scored nine points, Jala Jordan (Auburn), who contributed four points, and Allie Palmieri (Boston College), who added two points.

Alexia Allesch, who came back to the Pirates after playing a season at Appalachian State, collected two rebounds in her return.

Expect these new Pirates to begin to shine in the coming weeks as they adjust to head coach Tony Bozzella’s system, and it continues tonight with a major non-conference test against a storied rival.
