The Seton Hall Pirates (4-2-2) got a huge win Thursday at Owen T. Carroll Field against the Columbia Lions (3-2-1) by a score of 3-0.

By no means was it a pretty game, but the Pirates did what they had to do to walk away victorious. The defense played very well, stuffing the Lions on five corners they had throughout the night despite giving up 20 shots.

Grace Gordon played arguably one of the best games of her career, stopping all ten of Columbia’s shots on goal.

On the other side of the field, the Hall could not seem to be more fortunate as they notched just eight shots all game, with only six making it to the frame and three of those going in.

The first goal came in the 14th minute off the foot of Emma Sheehan. Then things seemed to quiet down on both sides, with the Pirates and Lions locked like two brick walls.

In the 35th minute, Phoebe Hampson netted Seton Hall their second goal of the night and the crowd finally began to get into it.

The second half was a mess on both ends, the Pirates were unable to even muster a shot until late in the half, along with that cracks were beginning to show in the defensive front forcing Grace Gordon to step up and preserve the Hall’s lead.

As time started to run out, the Lions began to get a bit chippy from time to time, however it was the Pirates that were called for two yellow cards in the game, the first going to Sophie Liston in the 63rd minute and then another being given to Maddy DeCola in the 78th minute.

Despite all of this the Pirates found the back of the net deep in the second half as Natalie Tavana secured just her second goal of her career in the 84th minute of play.

Colombia tried to come back after that, but it felt like the Pirates had sent them packing near the end of the first half in terms of scoring opportunities, not to say there were not scares by a good Colombia front line.

With all that being said, Seton Hall looks to continue the win streak as they open Big East play against Providence (2-5-1) on Thursday, Sept. 22 at Owen T. Carroll field. Check it out online at WSOU.net.
